There are a multitude of books about photographic techniques, but few about the content of a photograph. This is an invaluable book about photographic aesthetics.

That rarest of things: original insight into photography 23 Dec 2009

This book can change the way you think about photographs, increase your perception of what is going on in a photograph and help you understand why most photographs fail to engage you in any way. All you have to do is think while reading it. This is not a "how to do it book": this is a "what has been done -so far- book".
