Review

Appearing Angels is incredibly easy to read, but this doesn t mean that it is an easy read. The author deals with subjects that for many sheltered middle Englanders are the stuff of nightmares: a violent teenage gang rape, anorexia, difficult parent-daughter relationships, bulimia, alcoholism and drugs. That Sarah is still here to tell the tale is testament to her sheer strength of character. From the illicit girls night out that unravelled so drastically the book moves quickly through her teenage life and despite it dealing quite explicitly with some harrowing subjects, I just couldn t put it down. Sarah has threaded the angels in her life beautifully through this book and it is this element which stops this feeling like misery-lit and turns it into quite something else. Twenty-four hours on from finishing the book I m still thinking about it and the questions the book raises. It s a brave book. There are plenty of scenes which don t paint Sarah in a flattering light far from it. And yet through Sally Asling has told, what feels like, a very balanced story. I also don t feel a sense of poor me which you so often get from books of this genre. And frankly, Sarah would be entitled to take more than a little tea and sympathy, she has had a tough life. Appreciating Angels: Sarahs Story is absolutely compelling, thought provoking, harrowing and encouraging all in one. Well worth a read -- --Fiona Humberstone, Founder, Flourish Print and Design

This book was so powerful to read I had to stand up while reading it. I was on a flight to Chicago and I found it so moving, so honest, so real, and so sad that I went to the back of the aeroplane crying my eyes out. I have led a sheltered life, I have never knowingly come into contact with anyone who has experienced the challenges Sarah had and survived such pain. You have given me an education and the ability to me more empathetic and understanding when people appear to be destructive, yet it is them-self they are trying to destroy. I am proud to have been this close to Sarah through her story. Congratulations on such a compelling book. --Penny Power, Founder, Ecademy

I ve never read anything like this, thank heaven for it s publication. With brutal honesty Sarah conveys the truth about her teenage and student life. Parts of which I m sure many will relate to on one level or another. This is a lesson in forgiveness and letting go. Appreciating Angels has had a profound effect on me, drawing up emotions and memories. It has simultaneously brought a lump to my throat and filled my heart to overflowing. This book will reach many people parents, daughters, sons, friends listen and watch those around you who may be crying out for warmth, a hug and understanding we can all learn to be Angels to one another as Sarah s Story so beautifully shows us. --Jackie Wlaker - Founder - Ugli

This is a book which should be read by all those young people who are in that age bracket where they are beginning to venture out into nightclubs and urban nightlife. It explicitly highlights the dangers of binge drinking and the false sense of security which it can lull the individual into. In this particular instance, a young girl was brutally raped during her first ever visit to a club. This one night had a far reaching affect on her life for many years to come.

The book is an excellent snapshot of the culture of alcohol, substance and sexual abuse which is rife amongst vast swathes of the young today. The book asks the reader to consider key issues including anorexia, bulimia, self-harm, low self-esteem, sexual promiscuity and depression. The central character attempted to bury her ordeal instead of dealing with it at the time of the incident and as a result, got caught up in a whirlwind of psychological and physical health problems.

The book is extremely well written and I genuinely cared for the central character, Sarah. As she slipped deeper and deeper into a quagmire of abuse and health problems, I wanted to shout out and bring her back from the cusp of complete mental and physical breakdown. The story is one of an immense struggle in which the main protagonist had to cope with the effects of a brutal crime almost singlehandedly.

I was compelled to keep turning the pages, I wanted to discover what was going to happen to Sarah and therefore, the book is readable and very accessible. It is graphic, brutal, violent, but completely necessary reading. I wasn't overly enamoured with the new-age spiritualistic symbols and references which I encountered fairly frequently; but that was only a minor grumble and one which certainly does not detract from the book's overall message of silent suffering.

Buy it, read it, and if you think it appropriate, share it with a young person to highlight the dangers of urban nightlife.

A brutal, startlingly honest account of one young woman's life journey. From a shock encounter in her youth to the final resolution, we see the triumph of hope and belief over pain and hurt. Sarah's story will take you to places you may wish you had never been, but stay with her, as you will also discover the magic of angels who come into our lives at just the right moment. Maybe, like Sarah, you will be surprised to discover the angel in you, and know how you too can change the lives of others in the best possible way. Looking forward to the next two stories in this trilogy!

Appreciating Angels is the story of Sarah, whose life is changed suddenly and dramatically by a traumatic event while she is still in her teens. Unable to deal with the emotional fallout, she embarks on a rollercoaster of self-destruction, gaining control in the only way she feels able - through anorexia, self harm and alcohol.

Though the subject matter sounds thoroughly depressing, this is actually an amazingly positive book and what shines through is Sarah's strength, and how she touches the lives of those she comes into contact with. Those people, in turn, have a profound effect on Sarah for varying reasons, and the fact that we catch up with these characters at the end is a nice addition to the book.

It is a well written, emotional read and the kind of book that stays with you long after you have read it. I have already downloaded the second book and will look forward to the third when it is published.

For all of us there are people we have loved, who have not been able to love us back. There are people who have loved us and we have not given them any time or love in return.
