This is a fantastic book for working with .NET's extensive XML classes. The chapters are incredibly well organised, and are full of sound advice.

The book does not cover the full syntax of things like XPath, but will give you sound knowledge of issues like when to use an XmlReader or an XmlDocument. There are other books out there containing the intricacies of the various of XML syntax.

The book also goes into great depth how the classes work, which gives you a firm understanding of them.

As for examples being in C# and VB.NET, who cares- it is not exactly difficult to read both.

My 4 stars are by no means a lack of dis-respect for Dino Esposito, he is a great writer of .Net books and a vast ocean of knowledge as I have many books by him.

I shall start with the positive comments first, Dino's writing skills are with out question excellent and his direction and content are excellent.

If you want to learn XML with .Net this is the book to buy, its the best that I have bought and easiest to understand.

Excellent references and well documented examples with good diagrams to boot!

I cant find any typos or other mistakes as the technical support from Francesco Balena and others are excellent again.

Each section is broken down nicely and some are a little hard going but re-reading clears this up.

The code examples downloaded from the Microsoft websit are excellent and go further than the book!

Overall a great purchase and will help me at work!

Negative points, as a VB.Net writer I was hoping to find the reference material and examples in VB.Net how ever to my dismay the book examples flick from Vb.Net to Csharp at an alarming rate. Dino starts some examples in VB.Net and finishes with Csharp??

You have to follow the book examples with the downloaded code examples in VB.Net.

Final negative point is that the code examples are not clearly marked for each section, and there may be 5 or more examples to each section and trying to find the correct example can be a pain.

Final note: If your going to write a book on XML and .Net please write the examples in either VB.Net or Csharp, as other Csharp writers and VB.net writers will find the same problems. Its a shame as this book could have been great otherwise!

*THE* XML book for .NET 28 Jun 2004
By Terry Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Dino Esposito has total, absolute command of the subject matter that he expertly teaches in this book. This is a template for how all technical training books should be written. I wanted in-depth coverage of the XML object library in .NET and that is exactly what this book delivers. This is THE book on XML in .NET. Don't waste your money on anything else.

It is also terrific supplemental material for the Developing XML Web Services and Server Components certification exam. I recommend Mike Gunderloy's book as an all-encompassing source (look up my review for that book); however, I recommend reading the first four chapters of this book before you start Gunderloy's book if you don't have much experience reading and writing XML in .NET. Chapters 12 and 13 on remoting and web services, respectively, are also great sources of exam prep material. In fact, Chapter 12 on .NET Remoting is the best chapter on the subject you will find anywhere.

stop punishing yourself with MSDN 11 Jan 2005
By David Douglass - Published on Amazon.com

Dino tells all in this superb and in depth look at XML on Microsoft's .NET platform. The book is well organized, starting at the fundamental classes and then branching out to the high abstraction level .NET classes and other Microsoft products such as SQL Server 2000 and Internet Explorer.

As an example of why this book is so wonderful, there have been several situations where I needed to do something in XSLT that just didn't seem practical (maybe not even doable). The section on how to use standard .NET languages such as C# from XSLT is itself worth the price of admission.

Keep in mind that readers are expected to have a good grasp of XML; the book is a .NET book.

in depth book 12 April 2003
By Xizhen Zhu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book tells many fundamental skills you need to know regarding XML. Focusing on the programming with .Net Framework instead of how to use .Net VisualStudio, this book gives you a solid knowledge to help you master XML programming. Many advanced topic are introduced, such as .Net Remoting, security, COM interoperability. But if you wanna know much more about these advanced topic, more detailed books you will need to read. But so far, after reading this book, you get a solid and general idea about XML programming with .Net framework. You will not get fooled any more with how these technologies are applied to the applications. Besides, the author gives insight comment and review regarding these topic in a relatively neutral way, which gives you more option to develop your application and provide objective choices in achieving the goal.
Finally, if you are interested in Web Service, Security, .Net Remoting, COM interoperability, additional books are required to you. But so far, this book really provides a general solid knowledge for you to go any further. And what i wish to tell is this book is definitely not for beginners, many other concept should you get to know before reading this book, otherwise you will find it hard to follow.
