Product Description

The Applied Bible Commentary is an easy-to-read, down-to-earth commentary on the Bible. A distillation of the finest evangelical scholarship,;it can be used with any version of the Bible and includes: General Articles on important aspects of the Christian faith An Introduction to each Bible book Clear summaries and explanations of Bible passages Word definitions Helpful applications of the Bible to everyday life 'Dr Tom Hale is a retired medical missionary who served in Nepal, and his book is essentially a missionary's commentary. Although he has done his biblical homework, and he thinks theologically, he does not write from the ivory tower of academia. His concern is rather for the grass roots of newly planted churches. He is familiar with the problems they face and the questions they ask. He wrestles with the need for cross-cultural application. He is committed to the unity of the church and urges us to give one another the liberty of interpretation in those secondary areas in which we disagree. And his straightforward, easy-to-read style includes both a simple vocabulary and short sentences. Inevitably a one-man commentary will not please everybody. But he has struggled to rid himself of bias, so that there is very much here for all Bible students to learn, whatever their cultural or denominational background. In fact The Applied New Testament Commentary should help to promote mutual understanding, tolerance and respect among Christian people.' John Stott All Souls, Langham Place, London 'As someone who is committed to communicating the Christian faith, I applaud the depth, clarity, simplicity and relevance of the Applied New Testament Commentary. It's thoroughness yet accessibility makes it an invaluable resource for Christians - both old and new.' J. John The Philo Trus

A Layman's Comments 30 Jun. 2000
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Bottom line up front - if this book is not the second book you own after the Bible, you're missing a great book! As we do our best to walk the straight and narrow path, we are often confronted, yes even confounded by, "what does scripture really mean regarding..." Unfortunately, each and every demonination may give you a different interpretation on God's Word; however, the Applied New Testament Commentary helps you sort through the chaff - without being biased towards any particular mindset or ministry. Further, each chapter helps lay out several different "solutions" to the most troubling questions (homosexuality, Holy Spirit Baptism, and what defines a Christian marriage) while always maintaining a scriptural basis for the answer. Finally, if even after reading the book you find yourself siding with the most common beliefs of many other Christians - you will find yourself much better equipped to give an answer to the hope that lies within you. Finally, and maybe most importantly, it doesnt' read like an encyclopaedia. Its clearly and concisely broken down into easily understandable chapters. Would I recommend it to a friend - unquestionably. As a matter of fact, I am purchasing one for a friend today!

Very Good One-Volume Commentary 6 April 2013

The Applied NT Commentary is divided into three major sections: Definition of Terms, General Articles and Commentary. One of the things I like about this commentary are the General Articles before the commentary and the approach they take in writing them. The articles cover Christian doctrine and serve as a mini-systematic theology, covering topics such as salvation, election, baptism and the second coming. The editors assume acceptance of certain basic Christian beliefs such as the Trinity, the death, burial and resurrection of Christ for our sins, the need for salvation, and the inspiration of scripture. What I really like is that on other issues, they present all of the major views. For example, they present look at the arguments for and against views of baptism as to what role baptism plays in our salvation and evidence for each. They look at different views of the second coming (pre-millennialism, post-millennialism, amillenialism) and presents the arguments for each. One theses and other "secondary" issues, they give the arguments for each and allow the reader to come to their own conclusion.

The second and largest part of the book is the commentary on the New Testament. Each book of the New Testament begins with an introduction which covers background information (authorship, themes, etc.). The introduction is followed by an outline and then commentary by chapter and verse. The commentary is basic Christian teachings/beliefs and I don't detect a strong bias. On more controversial passages, readers are referred to the articles in the General Articles. While the commentary is not in-depth, it is a one volume commentary and I don't expect that from it.

My one criticism of the book is the Kindle navigation. While one can go to the beginning of each book, the reader has to keep turning pages to get to the chapter. This can be difficult if one is looking for commentary in the middle of the Gospel of Matthew, for example. I really wish they would have linked the outlines to the commentary which would have made navigation much easier. Other than that, I'm really pleased with the commentary. The commentary part is helpful, but I find the General Articles to be very good and my favorite part of the book. I also appreciate the ecumenical approach the editors take.
