I started reading this book without having any prior experience with bioinformatics, and found it to be a really helpful tool in 'introducing' myself to this area of biology - the topics were explained in a very clear manner, in a language that was easy to read and understand, and most of all presented in a really interesting way. The exercises given at the end of each chapter are also quite useful. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone wishing to gain fundemental understanding of the subject and learning basic bioinformatics techniques.

Bioinformatics has great potential to enhance our understanding of molecular biology. This book is a fundamental resource which explores the principles of bioinformatics alongside the central dogma of biology. Molecular techniques are examined which range from DNA microarrays to structure-based rational drug design. The structure of this book is logical and coherent. The book starts by introducing the importance of computers and the internet and then relates this to the foundations of bioinformatics. It then explores the use of biological databases and genome sequencing. Proteomics, drug design and systems biology are then discussed before moving on to comparative genome analysis. Exercises are provided for each chapter and solutions to these are found at the end of the book.
This book has concise and colourful figures which engage the reader when exemplifying key examples. This book has been useful for my course in Level 3 Pathogen Biology and will be helpful for my upcoming Senior Honours Microbiology course. It explores the applications of BLAST for nucleotide and protein sequence searching which is a fundamental tool for examining the roles of genes and proteins in pathogenic microorganisms.
I have very few suggestions as to how this book could be improved. I think that this book should be used in conjunction with a molecular biology textbook to reinforce key principles. References provided in the book should also be consulted in addition to academic papers to examine examples. This book offers a unique insight into applying bioinformatics for research into pathogen biology. I strongly recommend this book for any student at undergraduate or postgraduate level studying biomedical and life sciences. (Alan Gordon Hall, University of Glasgow)
