From Amazon.co.uk

Violence, nudity, terrorism and swearing are not the usual cartoon fare, but with Appleseed we find ourselves firmly in the cyberpunk territory of Manga cinema. Based on the comic series by Masamune Shirow, the film's story takes place in a post-World War III future, in particular within the mega city of Olympus. With the city administered by the Biodroids (a race of perfect half-human, half-robot hybrids), there begins a human resistance to a society that offers little in the way of real freedoms. As with most of the Manga genre, the deceptively simple animation (reminiscent of Pokemon) conceal more than a few complex issues. Appleseed proves to be a thought provoking, if a little confusing, examination of the "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" argument, particularly as it somewhat blurs the moral borders by instilling both sides in the conflict with a degree of sympathy. Definitely one for Manga fans, but also recommended for SF buffs and those curious to try something a little different.

On the DVD: Appleseed on disc has various language options, with the possibility of watching the film in either the original Japanese or dubbed English. The picture is bright and clear, as is the soundtrack. Highly recommended is the audio commentary from voice actress Larissa Murray and Manga expert Jonathon Clements, which not only fills in many of the gaps left by Shirow's original film but also provides an invaluable and often humorous insight into the genre as a whole. --Phil Udell

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great Anime film. 7 April 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
I remember seeing the original Appleseed film and loving it when I was in high school, even though the original was only on for an hour. Well I have to say this new version is fantastic. The new CG artwork is amazing and will completely blow your mind if your new to this type of animation, or even if your already a Manga fan you will love this. Quite along film as well which is great and that makes it worth the money.

Buy the way, make sure you buy this on Blu-ray as its worth seeing the HD artwork detail in full. Also you can select in the main menu for the English version, as it comes as standard as a German Blu-ray language DVD. Very easy to change the language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ah Dang: Dubtitles 4 May 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Most people watching this will probably be puzzled by what's going on, that's mainly because you are suppossed to read the Manga it's based on. Well if you don't want to do that you could listen to the great commentary which will fill you in on some of the Backstory and characters to better understand the story.

The story is set after WW3 where nukes were not used but the Planet was still devastated by war, after this a Mega City called Olympus was built and was deemed the perfect city to live in and was managed by Bioroids. But some people don't like the idea of Bioroids in control and thus terrorists attack the city, up to stop them are SWAT members Deunan and here cyborg partner Briareos. Now they must stop the terrorist's before they try to destroy the city.

The video and sound are great but I think the English dub has far too many swear words in the second half of the anime and the subtitles are actually dubtitles which is really a bother for those who want to watch it's Original Japanese Language.

Extras:
Manga Trailer (Shadow Skill)
Video of Images
Commentary with Jonathan Clements and Larissa Murray (voice of Deunan)

5.0 out of 5 stars Review for 2004 version 16 Jun 2005
Format:DVD
There are two versions of this film, the original (drawn) version and the 2004 (CGI).
Having seen this film in subtitles before its release in English I have to say it's an awesome film. The CGI is stunning, out-classing all except Ghost in the Shell 2.
The film's set in the future where bioroids (ie: human look-alikes) co-exist with humans and, like any good Manga, the ending has a surprising twist.

Top-notch film; definitely one of the best Mangas in my list.
