4.0 out of 5 stars very nice... waiting for iWork '07, 29 Nov 2006
This review is from: Apple iWork 06 (Mac) (DVD-ROM)
iWork is a wonderful and very Apple-style product, including Pages (a Word meets Publisher application) and Keynote, a stunning presentation program.
I'm currently testing it to see if it can replace Microsoft Office for my work activities, and I think when iWork '07 (which will also include an Excel-like application) will be launched, it will be just perfect.
As all Apple stuff, it's very good-looking and pleasant to work with, just needs a few time to get used to it if you come from MS Office.
Pages is more than just a word processor, you can create extremely beautiful documents with it.
Keynote presentations are amazing and can be exported in plenty of formats, like Quicktime movies, .pdf, .ppt, .html etc.

@John Self...
Just click Command+B or Command+I to change highlighted text to bold or italic, or select "show Inspector window" and you'll get a panel with tons of information and settings for your document, including character formatting options.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking easy to use wordprocessor and photo package, 29 Nov 2006
By Adam (Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Apple iWork 06 (Mac) (DVD-ROM)
I'll be honest, I've mainly used Pages2 as I put together a regular pamphlet for a local pub. It's great for this kind of task where you want to easily assemble photos and text - the supplied templates are particularly rewarding here and enable a really professional result to be produced without any hassle. As ever there will inevitably be comparisons with Word, which I use regularly at work. Word is fine but at home I prefer this, as it integrates image handling far more seamlessly. If you want to get more complicated that's possible too but even a normally complex task like a mailmerge is simple and straightforward (I did a bit of experimenting the other day and had one up and running in a few minutes). If you're lucky enough to own a Mac you will appreciate the typical thought that has gone in to making the interface as intuitive and stylish as ever. I'd definitely recommend this software for the recreational/semi-serious home user who wants to quickly produce documents with visual flair.

3.0 out of 5 stars I work harder now..., 13 Nov 2006

This review is from: Apple iWork 06 (Mac) (DVD-ROM)
I made the switch a week ago from PC to Mac and am loving my shiny new Apple Macbook Pro. I also bought iWork 06 along with it as I thought I may as well go for the whole Apple experience instead of messing about with Word for Mac.

And so far my experiences of iWork have been mixed. It contains two applications, Keynote (for presentations, like Microsoft Powerpoint) and Pages (word processor, like Microsoft Word). I've only used Pages so far. It opened basic Word documents from my previous computer without a problem, retaining format, font, etc. However it was unable to open a Word document that had a table in it.

Pages is a good-looking and fast word processor but after using it for just a day or two I have found a couple of niggling issues. These seem to arise from Apple's commendable desire to streamline the programs and keep them simple. One thing is that you can't (and I checked their online support pages) have buttons in the toolbar for Italic/Bold etc. The only way to italicise text without using the keyboard is to go to the menu and click Format > Font > Italics. This is incredibly frustrating for someone who used to do it in one click in Microsoft Word. Another annoyance is that you can't do a word count for part of a document, just the whole thing. So if I want to see how many words I've written today, I can't just select the recent text and do a word count. I would have to open a new document, paste it in and do a count there. Infuriating!

These are just two things I've discovered so far, and there may well be others. For all Apple's claims of making things more user-friendly (which is true of the computer itself), this is pretty poor. I'm seriously thinking of getting Microsoft Office for Mac Student Edition just to have Word back again. It may be bloated, but now I know it's the handy basic features that make it bloated!

First off this is a brilliant package.
