Genius Mixes
Now there’s another great way to get a customised set of songs on iPod nano — have Genius do all the work. Introducing Genius Mixes. All you do is sync your iPod nano to iTunes, and Genius automatically searches your library and finds songs that sound great together to create up to 12 Genius Mixes. These genre-based mixes are like channels programmed entirely with your music. It’s a great way to rediscover songs you haven’t listened to for ages, and some you even forgot you had.

Genius Playlists
Say you have one song you really love and want to hear other tracks that go great with it. A few clicks on iPod nano, and Genius uses that song to find other songs in your library and makes a Genius playlist for you. You can listen to the playlist right away, save it for later, or even refresh and give it another go. Count on Genius to create combinations you wouldn’t have thought of yourself.

Shake to shuffle your music

FM radio + Live Pause. Return of the radio star
The new FM tuner lets you see the names of songs and artists. And the amazing new feature — Live Pause — makes listening to the radio nothing like listening to the radio. There’s always something great on the FM dial. And now the FM tuner lets you hear your favourite morning shows on your commute and discover new music while you work out. It even shows you what and who you’re listening to.

With Live Pause, you’ll never miss a beat
Say you need to take a quick break from listening to your favourite radio station. iPod nano lets you pause it with a click. Another click and you’re listening to your station again. You can even rewind as far back as 15 minutes, then fast-forward to catch up to the live broadcast.

VoiceOver. It speaks volumes
VoiceOver speaks the names of songs and artists. So you can navigate your music without looking at the screen. What if you’re listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist? Just use the Click Wheel or the controls on the optional Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic and VoiceOver tells you the song name and who’s performing it without interrupting your music. So you’re never distracted from your ride or run by looking down at your screen.

How it works
You’ll notice how smoothly and easily VoiceOver works. A lot of thought went into creating an iPod nano that not only talks, but says the right things. It all begins with iTunes and its seamless integration with iPod nano. First, iTunes reads your song information, then uses the VoiceOver Kit to generate the announcements for the songs, artists and playlists. Just sync your iPod nano to your computer and it really speaks to you.

It speaks multiple languages
iPod nano languagesYour music library has songs from all over the world — a love song from France, a bolero from Spain, a pop tune from Japan. Luckily, VoiceOver speaks fluent song.

iTunes selects the language and best voice for your song titles and artist names. It looks at song data, like the title, artist and album information, then applies intelligent algorithms to choose the right language. For example, iTunes recognises the song “Ya Viene el Sol” by Ozomatli as a Spanish song, so your iPod nano will automatically speak that song title and artist in Spanish. If you prefer to hear that information spoken in another language, you can change the designated VoiceOver language for that song in iTunes.

Pedometer and Nike + iPod
The new Pedometer counts every step you take. Or you can add Nike+ shoes and a Nike + iPod Sport Kit. Which makes your iPod nano the perfect workout partner. You take your iPod nano with you everywhere. Why not use it to stay fit? iPod nano now doubles as a Pedometer. It uses the built-in accelerometer to keep track of your steps and help you meet your fitness goals. You can create a daily step goal or set it to Always On so it counts all the steps you take, all the time. Which makes iPod nano the ideal exercise partner.

Note to self: Voice Memos are here
The built-in mic lets you capture a thought, a reminder, a class lecture or any audio recording you want with Voice Memos.

iTunes. Your greatest hits
It's even easier to organise, browse, grow and share your digital music and video collection with the new iTunes. And now you can save items with a wish list and enjoy iTunes extras — bonus features on select albums and films like lyrics, photos, interviews and behind-the-scenes media.

2.0 out of 5 stars Design flaw, 18 Mar 2010
This review is from: Apple iPod nano with Camera 16GB - Green - 5th Generation (Electronics)
I rarely write reviews, in this case I'll make an exception.

I bought the 16GB 5th Generation ipod nano as a replacement for the old 2nd generation 8GB model. I'm not a fan of Apple but the ipod appealed to me for two reasons, firstly I am subscribed to a lot of podcasts, and being the market leader it is just so much easier on itunes even if the software isn't the most ergonomic music library I have come across, and secondly, being the market leader it has an amazing array of different accessories and this is where the 5th generation ipod falls flat on its face. Unfortunately some genius at Apple decided to move the cable port from the left hand side to the right which means not only do non of my current accessories fit very well (or in the case of my car charger/transmitter - at all) but very few on the market will either - 5 years worth of accessories wiped out in a single stroke. Whether or not the 5th gen nano will be supported is hard to say given Apple themselves are too busy pushing the touch and the iphone.

I can't say the nano isn't an impressive mp3 player, the design looks great, the screen is sharp and sound is as good as any nano. The usefulness of the camera however is debatable and not at all necessary as far as I'm concerned, the camera is also solely a video camera which means it oddly can't take snapshots - only video. The ability to play movies (something not seen until the 3rd gen nano's and later) also seems unnecessary for an mp3 player with limited resolution and memory space, although the resolution in this case does seem to be a dramatic increase over the 3rd generation and a slight increase over the 4th. The volume has also been limited on the European models it seems and is noticeably quieter than previous models, I haven't found this a problem using the ear plugs but it is a problem when connecting it to external unpowered speakers. This generation of nano's also comes equipped with an internal speaker which seems to work when the earphones aren't plugged in, its a nice touch although as you'd expect it is both quiet and of poor quality.

If this is your first ipod and you just want to listen to music on the go then this may be for you. If, like me, you are replacing an old nano or are planning on using old accessories to catch up on podcasts during the daily commute in the car you'd be better off looking for a 4th gen nano.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bless you, Mr Jobs, 21 Sep 2009
This review is from: Apple iPod nano with Camera 16GB - Green - 5th Generation (Electronics)
This is just the loveliest gadget ever.

I've used mine non-stop since it arrived. At last an iPod with a radio and I never knew I needed a pedometer, but it's great fun.

Although the screen is small, it is quite adequate for watching films.

Everything about it is really excellent. Well done, Apple, as usual!
