New Apple iPod Classic

Hold Everything

Decisions, decisions. Who needs ’em? Why should you have to choose what to put on your iPod? With up to 160GB of storage, iPod classic lets you carry everything in your collection — up to 40,000 songs or up to 200 hours of video — everywhere you go. In a completely new, even thinner, all-metal design, this iPod is a modern classic.

New Apple iPod Classic

New Apple iPod ClassicOverview

With 80GB or 160GB of storage(1), iPod classic gives your music and video room to move. It also has plenty of energy (up to 40 hours of audio playback 2), good looks (a sleek, all-metal design), and a great personality (a brand-new interface with Cover Flow). In other words, iPod classic makes an ideal companion. Why not get to know it better?

New Apple iPod ClassicCover Flow

If a picture says a thousand words, think of what all the album art in your collection might say. With Cover Flow on iPod classic, you can flip through your music to find the album you want to hear. Use the Click Wheel to browse music by album cover, then select an album to flip it over and see the track list.

New Apple iPod ClassicMusic

Use the Click Wheel to adjust volume, navigate songs, browse in Cover Flow, or explore the Music menu by playlist, artist, album, song, genre, composer, and more. Want to mix things up? Click Shuffle Songs. iPod classic makes your music look as good as it sounds, thanks to its big, bright, colour display.

New Apple iPod ClassicMovies

Buy movies from the iTunes Store and you can sync them to your iPod classic to watch anywhere, anytime. The gorgeous 2.5-inch display makes your movies pop. And iPod classic keeps you entertained for up to 7 hours. Long flight or darkened room? Adjust the brightness for even more video playback time.

New Apple iPod ClassicTV Shows

There’s always something good on iPod classic. Browse thousands of episodes of your favorite TV shows on the iTunes Store then sync them to iPod classic. Watch last night’s episodes this morning, or buy a whole TV series and play a pocket-size marathon.

New Apple iPod Classic

New Apple iPod ClassicPodcasts

The iTunes Store features thousands of free video and audio podcasts, including indie favorites and offerings from such big names as ABC News, Comedy Central, ESPN, PBS, NPR, and many more. Browse and subscribe to podcasts, then sync them to your iPod classic. You can even play video podcasts on TV using an optional Apple component or composite AV cable.

New Apple iPod ClassicAudiobooks

The digital shelves of the iTunes Store are stocked with thousands of audiobooks — including exclusives like the entire Harry Potter series — so you can catch up on your reading wherever iPod classic takes you. iPod classic recognizes where you left off and bookmarks your place. You can even adjust the reading speed to suit you.

New Apple iPod ClassicGames

Put hours of fun at your fingertips. iPod classic comes with three games — Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike — and you can download more from the iTunes. All iPod games are designed specifically for the iPod interface. And all of them look great on the 2.5-inch colour display.

New Apple iPod ClassicPhotos

iPod classic holds up to 25,000 photos you can sync from your Mac or PC via iTunes. Use the Click Wheel to scroll through photo thumbnails the same way you scroll through song titles. To see a photo full screen, click the center button. You can even view photo slideshows — complete with music and transitions — on iPod classic or on a TV using an optional Apple component or composite AV cable.

New Apple iPod ClassicSearch

With up to 40,000 songs1 on your iPod classic, you need an easy way to search your collection. A built-in search function lets you use the Click Wheel to type out the name of the song, artist, album, audiobook, or podcast you’re looking for. iPod classic returns results instantly as you select letters.

New Apple iPod ClassicExtras

Calendars, contacts, and a clock appear in the Extras menu, along with a few more handy items. Take the screen lock, for example. Spin the Click Wheel to choose a four-digit combination and protect your iPod classic from prying eyes. If you forget your combination, just reset when you sync. Or use the built-in stopwatch to log your best times.

1. 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.

2. Testing conducted by Apple in August 2007 using preproduction hardware and software. Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Important info for 1st time buyers of ipods, 22 Jun 2008
If you have never owned an ipod and are thinking of buying one for the first time then you should take the following in to consideration. If its just mass storage for your music you are after then then you will be making the right choice to buy this model as its capacity is second only to the 160gb version. Its easy to use and the cover flow and video capabilities make it a very useful and fun player to have. i currently have 6070 songs on it and around 10 music videos and have added three games and its not even half full yet. Now for the important stuff - If its good sound quality your after then you will be very let down by this. The EQ settings are not suitable for all songs and will find that a lot of the songs you put on it will sound too tinny or too distorted but sound very empty. Max volume is poor and around 75% of my songs sound too quiet to enjoy, even at max volume. Apple have made big improvements regarding storage and relyability, for example, earlier models will easily crash and skip songs, but this one hasnt given me any problems in the 6 months i have had it, the only problem is the sound. Ipods are getting better with each generation, and this player is near perfection, except the most important thing - the sound! Apparently Apple are taking this matter seriously after many complaints about the sound. So if you are a first time buyer, then i would wait and see what the next generation of the classic brings us, this one has been out for nearly a year now so a new version should be on the cards very shortly. Just one or two changes and ipods will be worth every penny. But you can find much better sounding mp3 players on the market for much cheaper. Whatever your choice, enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but..., 11 Oct 2007
By J. Probert - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This new version of the iPod video is much better than the previous 5th generation one. It has much better battery life (30 hours for the 80Gb and 40 hours for the 160Gb), much more memory for an affordable price.

It is however the little things that apple do that annoy me. There is no case with it, so i have to buy one myself. But oh well, not much of a bit deal. The usual rubbish earphones, but we all knew that anyway.

The new matt aluminium finish is great, it means less scratching that the old version. But why??!! oh why!?! did they leave the mirror finish on the back? I can't put the thing down anywhere without it scratching. So it stays in the case all the time, where you can't show it off! hehe

But other than this, A great piece of kit with the best music interface there is (iTunes). There are also new improved games!!

Cover flow is also a really neat novelty, although if you don't have 100% of the artwork it looks a bit naff. It also eats battery life so i don't tend to use it much, but that is up to you.

And don't buy the 160Gb, it's waaayyy too big. I have 15 or audio books and 5000 odd songs and mine is nowhere full so I wouldn't bother. Don't get the touch either, too small, it's jsut the iphone without the phone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The iPod, done right, 4 Jan 2008
By J. Sparrow "john sparrow" (Windsor, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the 4th - yes, 4th - iPod I have owned. I had a 1st gen 5GB back in the day, which I loved ad cherished until it was stolen. Replacing it with a 5gen 60GB had to do. By then, Apple had the capacity way up and had incorporated video. But, well, I'm sure many 5 and 5.5gen owners will admit to using practically none of the superfluous features.

Well, the classic gets it right. Fed up with my 5gen, I sold it, cut my losses and bought the classic after playing around with it in an Apple Store. Wonderful. Scratchy back plating aside, here is a quick breakdown of pros and cons:

PROS:

- Increased capacities - 80GB was previously the max, now there are whopping 80 and 160GB models
- Size decreases - the 80GB is reminiscent of the older 30GB models in terms of size. Very slim. the 160 is chunkier, but for the amount of storage, great. Still a portable device.
- Battery life - WITHOUT COVERFLOW you will get pretty close to Apple's promises on battery life. Days can go by without the need for recharging, and of course, sporting the latest battery technologies, there's no harm in topping up as and when.
- Lovely display and interface - Apple really have improved the interface. the display seems better than the 5.5gen, with an eversoslightly better resolution, though I could be mistaken. The screen is noticeably easier to view videos with than was the 5gen model I used to own. Brightness is great. The interface is intuitive.
- That finish - hold one of these in the flesh. It makes a difference. They are gorgeous looking.
- Weight - they are light enough to be pocketable and your trousers won't fall down. This matters.
- The price - well, it's right.

CONS:

- COVERFLOW - Ok, so Apple went to town with the interface. Unfortunately, Coverflow is more than surplus to requirements, it's detrimental to battery life. This is not to be taken lightly. Relying on hard disk power to churn away those animations means that a wonderful battery life is reduced to a few hours if you use Coverflow too much. If you must use it, do so sparingly or not at all. It's eye candy for sure, and it's also nice to stumble across the odd forgotten album of yesteryear, but you'll not have much playback time...

- Accessories - Beware if you own accessories for older iPods and expect them to work in this one. Many addons (for example, the TV connector which now operated though a dock cable rather than from the headphone socket) will not work with this model.

All in all though, this really is the iPod I've been waiting for. For those of you with large music libraries, some podcast subscriptions and a few videos, you can't go wrong.
