Great product, works well. Yes it has drawbacks, but anyone who uses this for a while will completely forget about them. Love the UI - well done apple!
People comment on its lack of flash, and its lack of a USB, but you have youtube and you can connect it to a laptop, so both of these issues are massively diminished. As an e-reader it is superb, and as a portable device for watching movies etc. it is unmatched. Love it, and so do the rest of my family!
BUT, only buy this if you are prepared to part with not only the cost of the device, but also the money required for the basic apps, a case, a screen cover and whatever other essential accessories come along. Still, a brilliant device, and wonderful to use. And remember, an iPhone 4 with equivalent memory and a slower processor costs the same amount! Perhaps not such a rip of after all...

I bought this as a gift. Everybody loves it and I get to use it too. For browsing newspapers it is excellent - the gestures to change the font size and scroll the text are really intuitive. The screen size is good.
It only has 256 Mbytes of main memory and a 1 GHz processor, but it feels faster than a 2 Gybyte 3 GHz MS Windows box.
The instant On and Off and the really easy WIFI and 3G set up are a real joy.
The flaws:
I love the screen size, but the device can't be placed into any pocket I own. That's major issue for me.
The SIM card slot is a micro-SIM that are almost impossible to find, so you have to cut down your larger 3G SIM card. This is not so easy and it means your SIM card can then only work in the iPad. This design decision is indefensible. There is hundreds of times enough room for a normal SIM card. Jobs is playing games with his customers.
There is a touchscreen keyboard, but it lacks cursor keys and a control key. This makes text entry a very frustrating experience. This design decision makes the iPad merely a passive web browser rather than a computer that provides a full interactive WEB experience. I can switch to a Russian keyboard with a single tap, but still Mr. Jobs won't let me use a cursor with the keyboard!
There are 6 versions of the iPAD, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of storage with and without 3G. I bought the 32GB 3G version. It is criminal that the user can't upgrade the memory or add 3G later. You have to choose when you purchase. Mr Jobs has decided that you can not be given the choice to even plug in a SD memory card. It doesn't even have a USB connector so you can't back up to a USB data key or connect your own 3g modem. Such arrogance and greed! It is the computer for Socialists - you pay the money and somebody else decides what you can have. The moment a decent open alternative appears on the market, the current iPAD is almost certainly toast. It is extraordinary that Mr Jobs thinks he knows how you will use your computer when he has never met you and has no idea about your requirements.
It doesn't seem to cache web pages so on a 3G connection the back button appears to reload the page. This causes me to use up expensive 3G bandwidth.
Should you buy it? Well it's a lot of fun and quite useful on the road, but a small netbook is far better in practice. The OS will be upgraded and some of the software problems may be fixed, but don't hold your breath. The hardware flaws will remain. Unless you can afford an expensive toy rather than a truly useful tool you should wait for a better solution. This review was not written on the iPad. I could not type this much without major frustration. We may buy an external keyboard, but then you have two bits to carry about. Who wants that? Why five stars? Well despite Mr Jobs making this a closed device, it is still a nice toy.
Mr Jobs could have made a World beater, so good that it became the defacto standard, but he has choosen to ignore that and go for the closed solution with the controlled iStore to determine what software you may install.

Although foolishly I made a terrible mistake in purchasing this item; I had seen the Apple TV advertisment for an iPad, demonstrating face to face communication; and, foolishly I assumed, that all iPad's had a camera. Of course, this model I purchased does not have a camera. And, although that is a problem when chatting on "Skype" to my relatives overseas; I have now got used to this model I have; and I am quite content having purchased it. I should mention, I did notify (thru AMAZON) the suppliers, FONZE MANIA, that I had, by mistake, purchased the wrong iPad. That, I should have purchased iPad 2; so the suppliers kindly agreed to replace the iPad I have, with the iPad 2, I should have purchased in the first place. However, the extra cost was a price at this time that I cannot afford. So I am stuck with the one I have; and, I love it. It's a great electronic tablet to use and I cannot fault it in any way. Oh yes! there is but one 'failure' in the design of the iPad; there is no USB provision. GJS
