No, only the other way around. That is because thunderbolt is built into the logo board, older logic boards can't run thunderbolt because there is no thunderbolt chipset on the Intel logic board and cannot be added either; older architecture.

I find that mine works at FW800 speeds, no more, no less - the FW bus is now the bottleneck.

I currently use mine to connect a Drobo to my iMac. Does what it says gives me good data transfer rates as the iMac does nor have a firewire port.

I'm afraid I was attaching a Macbook Pro using this setup which works perfectly. Whether a Windows 8 laptop would work, I am unable to say. Sorry!

It's FireWire 800 but works with the 800-to-400 adapters.
