Product Description

The only Apple-certified book on OS X Lion Server, this comprehensive reference takes support technicians and ardent Mac users deep inside this server operating system, covering everything from networking technologies to service administration, customizing users and groups, and more. Aligned to the learning objectives of the Apple Certified Technical Coordinator certification exam, the lessons in this self-paced volume serves as a perfect supplement to Apple’s own training class and a first-rate primer for computer support personnel who need to support and maintain OS X Lion Server as part of their jobs. Quizzes summarize and reinforce acquired knowledge.

The Apple Pro Training Series serves as both a self-paced learning tool and the official curriculum for the OS X Lion and OS X Lion Server certification programs.

There is probably more information in Apple's online Lion Server documentation than in this book. Certainly there is very little in the way of serious trouble shooting or useful maintenance hints and tips - and as you'll inevitably have problems with Lion Server you'll be lost pretty quickly relying on this book. This is really just a reasonably methodical but somewhat basic 1st time set up manual for Lion Server, nothing particularly in-depth and not really something to help you day to day in keeping the beast up and running. Tech books are pricey but I expected more from this. Pretty expensive for what it is.

I went for a training course for 10.7 Support Essentials and wished I had known about these books before the course. Now, I am planning the Server Essentials course and I've purchased this book in preparation. I'm glad I did. It will help incredibly as the course progresses. It's great to get a head start for passing the 10.7 Exam. Highly recommended reading for the pre-course.

Excellent 11 Jan 2012

Excellent reference for learning & understanding Lion Server. You can pass Apple's Lion Server Certification Exam by studying this book.

This book is designed in a really great, easy-to-understand methodology that really drills home the lessons into your brain.

Each chapter contains the following:

1. An explanation of everything you need to know on that particular topic -- in a clear, easily understandable manner. It really felt like the author was having a conversation with you, talking in plain English and holding you by the hand throughout the entire process. It was really just excellent. Advanced topics being presented to you in the simplest way possible.
2. A step-by-step walkthrough for you to apply what you've learned on your very own Mac running Lion Server. Just follow along with the steps and you'll get the desired results on your Mac.
3. A Q&A section at the end of each chapter to quiz you on what you've learned.

Thanks to this methodology, this book really helped me understand the main topic I needed help with, which was file sharing in Lion Server (including permissions, inheritance of permissions, and propagating permissions).

If I had one minor suggestion for the book, I would like even MORE screenshots added to the book. There actually were already a plethora of screenshots, but I was trying to learn Lion Server without easy access to my own Mac running Lion Server on it, so I was heavily dependent upon the screenshots to teach me what I needed to know. It would have been even easier for me if I had more screenshots, but if you have easy access to your own Lion Server, the included screenshots will be more than enough for you.
Basically, OS X Snow Leopard Server Essentials Revised 24 May 2012

Great book. Good examples. But I do sometimes get the feeling they just revised the Snow Leopard Server Essentials (SLSE). I think if you look many of the paragraphs are word for word from SLSE.

Whatever, if you're working with apple servers then get these books. They are the best resource (in addition to the apple forums) you're going to find. I run bunch of servers and always have this book on my desk.
4Stars 18 May 2012

I have a background as an IT and Networking Professional so I largely agree with Scott Rose' assesment of this book. I could see where others, without this background, might struggle a bit. The reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that it seems the editing of the book is a bit lacking...that it was done in a rush and not with the same careful thought that OSX Support Essentials v. 10.6 by Kevin White was written. All in all, however, not bad.
