Product Description

Strength. Lightness. Beauty. Seamlessly integrated.

MacBook Pro is machined from a single piece of aluminium, an engineering breakthrough that replaced many parts with just one. It’s called the unibody. And the first time you pick up a MacBook Pro, you’ll notice the difference it makes. The entire enclosure is thinner and lighter than other notebooks. It looks polished and refined. And it feels strong and durable — perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack.

Everything Apple designers and engineers do, they do for a reason. They chose LED backlight technology for the MacBook Pro because it makes the display instantly bright and allows it to be incredibly thin. They used edge-to-edge glass not just because it looks beautiful, but because it lends structure to the display. And at the top of the screen, they hid the new built-in FaceTime HD camera. So you see your friends and family in big, beautiful widescreen — and as little of the camera as possible.

The Multi-Touch trackpad has no button because it is the button. That means there’s more room to track and more room to click — left, right, centre and everywhere in between. Apple designers and engineers spent countless hours considering things like sensitivity (how much pressure triggers a click?), audio feedback (what does the click sound like?) and friction over the smooth glass surface (what does it feel like?). The result is a trackpad that just makes sense to you — and your fingers.

Easy access to connections and ports.

The connections and ports on MacBook Pro — MagSafe power, Gigabit Ethernet, Thunderbolt, USB, SDXC and audio in/out — are all smartly integrated on the same side of the notebook. So your cables stay neatly organised, and connecting and disconnecting your devices is easy and convenient.

Thunderbolt Port

Thunderbolt lets you connect high-performance devices and high-resolution displays to a single compact port. It even supports Mini DisplayPort devices — such as your Apple LED Cinema Display or an HDMI adapter for your television.

Designed to make an impact. Just not on the environment.

Complete control over how the MacBook Pro is designed, how it’s manufactured and how it’s packaged gives Apple an environmental edge. LED backlight technology preserves energy. Glass and aluminium are highly recyclable. MacBook Pro is free of most harmful toxins. And the 17-inch model ships in packaging that’s 34 per cent smaller than the original, while the packaging for the 13-inch model is 41 per cent smaller. That means fewer trees used for boxes and fewer planes, trains and lorries used for transport.

I am reviewing the quad-core i7 MacBook Pro after two weeks of use. This is my third 15.4" model in the last two years: I follow a strategy of upgrading my MacBook Pro as often as possible, and selling on my previous model immediately. Given the good re-sale values of Apple products, it makes some sense (the small premium for doing this compared to upgrading after several years is the price to be paid for always having the most capable&productive machine available for my business).

I bought mine with the 7200rpm 500GB HDD, 8GB of 1333MHz RAM and the optional 2.3GHz processor (comes with 8MB of L3 cache).

I am going to restrict this review to the differences I experience between this and my previous model (a 2.66GHz dual-core i7 with 8GB of 1066MHz RAM and a 7200rpm 500GB HDD, also reviewed on Amazon):

1) It vibrates/resonates much less, at least on my desk (when using the old model, there was a noticeable hum when the hard-disk was spinning).
2) The cooling fan spins up more readily. I guess it must, to cope with the additional processing power.
3) Wifi speed/sensitivity is appreciably better (not that it was particularly bad with the previous model, but it was much more sensitive than older MacBook models). I was expecting a significant improvement here, given that Apple apparently inserted an additional antenna into the new model. My best 802.11n speed at 5GHz has gone up from 216 to 270Mb/s, and does not vary as much according to position on the desk. It is usually achieving 243Mb/s; this is good, because my Time Machine back-ups and communications with my other computers take significantly less time.
4) The case feels a little bit warmer in normal operation. Given the additional processing power, this is not surprising.
5) Applications start up and shut down much faster. This is very important to me, given the many different apps I run each day. Microsoft Office 2011 is extremely fast, I am very pleased to say.
6) It scored 1243 in Novabench, compared to 788 for my previous model. So it is just over 50% faster, according to this measure; this is consistent with the video encoding (using Handbrake) improvement I saw when testing with a 1080p H264 file. Given that the old MacBook Pro was one of the fastest machines available, the performance of the new machine is quite a feat. It is genuinely a quad-core mobile workstation. Like the previous model, this is no mere laptop, it is a legitimate 'portable desktop' computer.
7) Battery life is still useful, but unsurprisingly it is about 75% of what the previous model could achieve. This is not so important to me given that I use the MacBook Pro as a portable desktop as opposed to a mobile laptop. For very mobile situations, my iPad comes into its own.

In summary, Apple have upped the game again, it seems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who's the Mac Daddy! 2 Dec 2011
By Norman Cheeseworthy TOP 1000 REVIEWER
This is my first experience of a Mac after many years of using PCs.

I won't go into all the techy details (I don't understand a lot of it!) as other reviewers have done that far better than I can, but my first impressions are very good indeed.

I was a little bit daunted by the prospect of using a completely different operating system after years of using Windows, but it doesn't take very long to get used to it, and when you do, it is so logical and straightforward. I wondered how I'd ever managed without it.

The build is superb, but at a price in my opinion. I have the 15.4" MacBook, and whilst it is absolutely gorgeous, it is rather heavy - I certainly wouldn't want to be carrying it around on a daily basis. I suppose if weight were a major issue, then the 13" version may be the way to go. There are a few minor niggles such as certain functions on the keyboard being different to what I'm used to (no delete key) and symbols in a different place (@) but these are minor details, and I can live with it.

Performance wise, it is blistering quick compared to my Vista PC - like a breath of fresh air!

It is still early days, but I am definitely a converted Mac fan! I still use my PC (because I have to) but I couldn't imagine my life without a Mac now!
