Since my Bluray & DVD collection is now upto 3 large shelves, I decided it was time to begin my search for an online video store! Essentially, what I was looking for was "something" that should allow streaming movies instantly from the internet and that too at a resolution of 1080p. This "something" shouldn't be too expensive either. It should be connected via Wi-Fi, and any films to purchase or rent should be similar to that you'd find in a video store (like good old' blockbusters) - that is, not too expensive to rent and there shouldn't be a requirement for a monthly contract. Once the film has been rented out, it should be available for some time so that you don't have to make an effort to watch it immediately. Furthermore, with regards to this "something, it should also possess the ability to allow an optical audio connection to a Dolby Digital receiver. All of these requirements for this "something" was found in Apple's offering through Apple TV.

As is usually the case with Apple products, the installation was a right breeze (it actually went so fast that I thought there was something wrong!)
All that is required to do is to connect an HDMI cable from the Apple TV to the TV, an optical cable to the receiver and of course connect the power cord. After turning it on for the first time, you have the option to choose the correct wireless network from a list of all available connections and then to enter your password. Following this, you log into your iTunes Account and there you go, Bob's your Uncle. You're all set!

Let me start by putting it bluntly, for the benefit of people reading reviews who want to know whether to buy this or not.
YES, buy it and here's a short summary:
(++ Scroll to the bottom for Updates ++)

Small discreet and beautifully made box.
HDMi 1080p and S/PDIF output.
Easy to connect and set up.
Intuitive onscreen menu system - with aluminium remote.
iTunes Movie/Music, Flickr, Vimeo, Youtube, Netflix etc
Connects seamlessly to the iPhone and Macintosh and Windows PC (I have discovered)
Mirrors iPhone - play games/browse/Watch Movies on iPhone/Pad/Pod in full 1080p HD on your TV wirelessly.
Mirrors Macintosh (with OS X Mountain Lion+) Mirror your iMac or Powermac Pro screen!
Very stable and quick.
Does not compete with but adds another dimension to Virgin TiVo/Sky etc
Discards the need for a complicated and unintuitive "Smart TV".

Watch AMAZON PRIME INSTANT VIDEO too - by streaming it from iMac to TV in lounge (mirror iMac screen)

**UPDATE. ** Apple had updated Apple TV to v. 6.0 which gives iOS7 compatibility, iCloud compatibility so you can play your Cloud purchases anywhere and added photo podcasts radio video music cloud services plus more content and channels - Thank you Apple! :)

**AND Apple continues to update this, as of March 2014 this is still the latest model too.**

A bargain price for what you get and Amazon are approx 20 - 30 % cheaper than Sainsbury/Tesco etc.

My purchase started as I was wondering how I'd wire my iPhone 5 to my new Virgin Media TiVo box.

Bought this mainly so I can watch Netflix movies on my big tv (as my Samsung smart tv won't install the Netflix app). As you would expect with Apple, everything just works out of the box and is easy to set up. The only thing i've spent any time figuring out is that my TV doesn't pass-thru Dolby 5.1 audio, so I had to connect the Apple TV via optical cable straight into my soundbar (rather than via the tv) and switch on the Dolby option in the 'Apple TV set-up menu' and it works fine now, but that's Samsung's fault, not Apple's!

We also have ipads and iphone's in the house which work seamlessly with the Apple TV, playing movies and listening to itunes music. Their is also a YouTube app which I found to be very good.

The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because I think it's time Apple starting thinking about other regions more (not just the US of A) and gave us BBC iPlayer, and some of the 'on demand' channel aps like for the likes of itv, C4 and C5. Then Apple TV would be perfecto!

As usual, well designed bit of kit from Apple. Easy to set up and is flawless if you have an Airport Extreme or Express. I have used it with my Virgin Superhub too without any problems. Since buying it I have watched more stuff off the internet than I have from terrestrial TV!. Small and unobtrusive.

I had been reading the reviews on the Apple TV for some time and had mixed feelings on what to expect. I bought an ipad3 2 weeks ago and looked at what I could use with it.. I saw a quick demonstration of the Apple TV at the Apple store in Birmingham and realised I could use it to play my music and videos as well as show my pictures on my Panasonic TV . What I did not appreciate was just how easy it was to set it up and use. In addition I had not realised how much can be obtained as a stand alone item without using the iPad as the controller.

The quality of the music, pictures and video is fantastic. I downloaded Where Eagles Dare from iTunes onto my iPad and played it on my TV through the Apple TV connected to my Onkyo amp by HDMI cable. The amp has an HDMI out whiich is connected to the HDMI input on the TV, so the one lead from the Apple TV sends both picture and sound into the amp and the amp then sends the audio to the speakers and the picture to the TV. Bearing in mind this was filmed in 1968 and I only bought the standard version, the picture quality is brilliant and the sound is also first rate.

I also have an old Marantz amplifier and TV in another room. The amp does not have the facility of HDMI in and out but it does have facility to use an optical lead for the sound. The TV does have an HDMI in connection. I was able to take an HDMI lead from the
Apple TV and plug it into the TV ( but turned the TV volume down to zero) and took an optical cable from the Apple TV to the Marantz amp. The result was still lovely picture and sound.

By using the Apple TV controller without the use of the iPad I can still watch YouTube, see podcasts, listen to radio channels and view iTunes.
