4.0 out of 5 stars Magic Trackpad: unnecessary yet complementary 11 Aug 2010
By SpecialOrder937 TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
I know what you're thinking: I've got a nice new(ish) Apple Magic Mouse, do I really need another pricey Apple gadget? The answer is no you don't, but the lure of anything that comes out of Cupertino is hard to resist, and why should you?

The first thing to note is that the pad must be paired with your Mac (by clicking on the Bluetooth icon in the Menubar and then Set Up Bluetooth Device) before you run Software Update. After doing this, System Preferences will be updated with the Trackpad's preference pane, giving you access to its multi-touch options.

Even if you're accustomed to a MacBook's trackpad, the Magic Trackpad still takes a little getting used to. The MT is larger than a MacBook's pad and has to cover a greater area of screen real estate. While using a trackpad is quite intuitive on a laptop, with a desktop grabbing and clicking on a mouse is so ingrained in you that the MT is a bit disconcerting at first.

It's worth persevering though. Gestures on the MT - two-/three-fingered swipes left/right to navigate between pages, three-/four-fingered swipes left/right to switch between applications, four-fingered swipe up for Mission Control, four-fingered pinch for the Launchpad and the opposite (spread) to show the desktop - are numerically superior to the Magic Mouse and are usually much easier to carry out.

There are two other points about the MT you rarely see in reviews: with Tap to Click enabled, it's silent. After a couple days of using the MT, the Magic Mouse, in comparison, seems to scrape and clunk in a way that's positively primitive. For anyone who appreciates working in a quiet environment, the silence of the MT is immediately noticeable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic? You bet! 4 Dec 2010
What a fantastic item. I suffer from RSI and carpal tunnel syndrome and using a mouse is often uncomfortable and at worst painful. The Apple Magic Trackpad has revolutionised the way I interface with my computer. It's SO much easier to use than a mouse, I've had no pain or discomfort and it uses less desk space than a mouse.
The multi-touch functions are excellent.
As long as you follow the set-up instructions it'll work perfect right out of the box.
The battery life is better than I was expecting too.

I already have the magic mouse that came with my new iMac 27, but being predominantly a laptop user, prefer to use a trackpad device.

The Magic Trackpad look great sitting next to my mini wireless keyboard and the transition to using the pad is much more natural to me than using a mouse.

I decided to dock 1 star though because on my brand new imac, there wasn't an icon for the trackpad in preferences ... I made sure that I downloaded the latest software update ... still nothing!

Having worked my way through a forum or two, I decided that the best course of action was to download the magic trackpad update (just type magic trackpad update into your favourite browser) ... that cured the problem, but the annoyance was that I had to search for the fix in the first place.

Once going, my review is going to be no less glowing that all of the rest ... and I'm sure that with a bit of practice I will learn all of the tricks. I am reasonably au-fait with most of the functionality from the magic mouse, but the trackpads 3 and 4 finger swipes add more functionality.

There is no way that this will fully replace my magic mouse, as that is still useful for fine 'graphics' work, but I'm willing to bet that I will use the magic trackpad 90% of the time.

One thing I have noticed, and it may be foible of my typing style, but I have found that I need to have the trackpad a centimetre or two away from the keyboard as the tiniest brush with your little finger will send the cursor across the screen.

All in all, a great bit of kit, and if you, like me have migrated from laptops, you will find it invaluable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mouse is Dead! 11 Nov 2010
By MSG1969
Having been a PC user all my life I recently swapped my aging laptop for a shiny new Macbook Pro. I was instantly taken by the multi-touch trackpad which was so intuitive and easy to use compared to the old laptop with its two buttons and basic functionality. I use the Macbook as a desktop computer and had purchased a Magic Mouse to use with it but was disappointed that it didn't have the control or functionality of the trackpad, plus I found the ergonomics of it caused my hand to ache after only an hour or two. When I saw that the Apple Magic Trackpad was available I immediately ordered one and haven't looked back since. The extended size is ideal and I can cover the whole screen in a single sweep, the sensitivity is great (I've switched off the hard click function so I can work in silence), it looks great next to the wireless keyboard (it's the same dimensions and finish so it looks like an extension of the keyboard) and after a couple of days of getting used to holding my hand/wrist in a different position to a mouse I find I can work for hours without any discomfort. My mouse is now gathering dust and I can't see me ever going back to it. Viva la Trackpad!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product
This is easily the best, most responsive touchpad I have ever used. It is pricey, but you get what you pay for. Some of the touchpads on cheaper Windows laptops are very poor. Read more
