Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Say 'hello' to the smallest iPod Shuffle ever
The new iPod shuffle is jaw-droppingly small. It’s half the size of the previous generation, yet there’s room for so much more. With 4GB of storage, it now holds up to 1,000 songs and lets you enjoy multiple iTunes playlists. It's also the first iPod ever to include VoiceOver, a brand-new feature that gives your iPod shuffle a voice. With the press of a button, it tells you what song is playing and who’s performing it. It can even tell you the names of your playlists, giving you a new way to navigate your music.

Let your iPod Shuffle tell you what's
playing with the new VoiceOver function
Introducing VoiceOver
VoiceOver is the exciting new feature that lets your iPod shuffle talk to you. It entirely changes the way you browse and navigate your music. Say you’re listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist. With the press of a button, VoiceOver tells you—without interrupting your music. VoiceOver can also announce the names of individual playlists meaning you can store and select multiple playlists on an iPod Shuffle for the first time ever.

Because VoiceOver has been created specifically to work with iTunes, it operates incredibly smoothly. As iTunes reads your song information, it uses the new VoiceOver kit to generate the announcements for each individual song, artist and playlist on your iPod Shuffle. iTunes also automatically selects the language and best voice for your song titles and artist names. For example, iTunes recognises the song “Ya Viene el Sol” by Ozomatli as a Spanish song, so your iPod shuffle will automatically speak that song title and artist in Spanish. If you’d prefer to hear that information spoken in another language, you can change the designated VoiceOver language for that song in iTunes. With 14 languages to select from, you're bound to find an option which works for you.

Standing only 45.2mm tall, the new
Shuffle is the smallest iPod ever
Smallest Ever iPod
At only 45.2mm tall and 7.8mm thick, the new iPod Shuffle is the world’s smallest music player. To keep things compact we've moved the controls from the iPod shuffle to the earbud cord. This allowed us to make the new iPod shuffle dramatically smaller, but not just for dramatically smaller’s sake. It’s also easier to use, with the controls located where you can access them quickly. With command central now strategically placed in this more convenient location, you can navigate your music — and activate the VoiceOver feature — without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatever you’re doing.

Shuffle. Straight. Stop.
The main shuffle switch (now positioned on the top of the iPod Shuffle next to the earbud jack), has three positions. Flip it to the left and your music shuffles for a “whatever happens, happens” flow. Flip it to the middle and your songs play in order. Flip it to the right to turn it off.

Securely attach your iPod Shuffle with
the stylish new stainless steel clip
Ready to Wear
Even the iPod shuffle clip gets the rock star treatment. Now forged in stainless steel, the clip attaches securely to your shirt, jacket, workout gear, even your backpack. And the sleek, durable, anodised aluminium case — available in silver or black — makes iPod shuffle a wardrobe essential. And yes, there’s still room for personalised engraving.

More Music Storage
There was a time when limited storage meant you had to leave a lot of your songs on the sync-room floor. But now that iPod shuffle has 4GB of storage, you have plenty of room to store hours and hours of music — up to 1,000 songs. With room for multiple playlists, too.

Easily create and save multiple playlists
to your iPod Shuffle with iTunes
Multiple Playlists
You’ve probably made multiple playlists in iTunes. One for your commute. One for the gym. One for just chilling out. With the new iPod shuffle, you can sync your playlists and always find the perfect mix for your activity or mood. VoiceOver tells you the name of each playlist, so it’s easy to switch between them and find the one you want without looking.

I love apple, and i love ipod, but they really messed up with this product, it's got some serious design flaws.

Firstly the headphones, as everyone has mentioned. Without the headphones the unit is useless. And the headphones are really cheap, and pop out of your ears when exercising.

When the headphones are plugged in it's also tricky to change from shuffle to continuous play

Changing tracks is also annoying. If you want to scroll back through several tracks, you have to click the button three times for each track. Kinda annoying.

Is the voice-over tool necessary?

On the plus side, you can have different playlists, and the memory is bigger. But I think the design of the 2nd Gen shuffle is much better. I would say to people to buy one of those instead

Very disappointed Apple!

Got this product to replace the other Shuffle I use for the gym (which kept putting itself into pause mode - anyone else had this problem?). By the way the comments the other reviewers have regarding the use of such products in the gym make me think they are not people who go to the gym regularly! If you are doing any kind of vigorous exercise you really need something that is going to be fixed to your ears in some way. People get around this by either having in-ear 'buds' or some band that clamps around the head. As soon as you get active (and especially if you get sweaty) the Apple earphones pop or slip out.

Immediately you open the package you realise the sneaky trick Apple have used for this product. The volume controls and the new gimmick for finding out track information are ONLY available if you used the supplied headphones. 'Sneaky' because the claim of 'the smallest ever' is only achievable by taking out some key functionality! How about that! It's almost like that old sketch with someone with a small appliance and then the battery trundles into view on a trolley!

It is very small and very light. But has it been so necessary to sacrifice key functionality for the sake of a few millimetres? I certainly don't need it to be that small - even in the gym. And it is so small you can't even get the feeling of owning a beautifully engineered bit of technology. It's just a small black rectangle. Another few millimetres to includes volume controls would still leave it as simply a small black rectangle. Perhaps I am being petty, but I don't really get this.

Sound quality is excellent though - even with the much-criticised Apple headphones. And the track information 'gimmick' is actually really cool - I am one of those people with such an extensive music collection that I'm often not sure what track I'm listening to - never mind the artist! It really is good.

Minor point though, the 'clicker' on the headphone wire is (obviously?) very 'plasticky' and I'm not sure how robust it will be to prolonged use. Also it is quite high up on the wire - only about 5 inches from the ear - and I would have preferred it to be a little lower. But I guess that's just personal preference.

So why only one star? Well I'll be honest - I placed an earlier version of this review just after I got the product and was incensed by what Apple had done - after all so many people really don't like the Apple headphones (lack of comfort and ear-fit being obvious reasons why). And once you buy the product you are tied in to their 'cheap' headphones.

After listening I found the sound and feature to be so good that I have reviewed and edited my previously scathing review! But I couldn't change the star rating! I'd probably give it a 3.5 if I could. This is a very difficult product to rate: great sound and features but highly annoying dependency on Apple headphones. Maybe some third party will produce some better headphones compatible with the new features. I guess a lot this comes down to personal choice - and given the number of people who clearly use the Apple earphones (yes the annoying ones who don't mind subjecting everyone else to their tinny music as those 'phones leak noise badly) - then it will be a sure-fire hit. For the discerning (and perhaps more affluent) listeners this will be hugely frustrating.

The new shuffle is a great product: it's small, holds a lot of songs, the voice-over function is really helpful for switching between playlists and, of course, it looks great. It has a flaw though. Being so small, the controls for the volume and skipping tracks are located on the headphones cable. If you use this for exercising, such as running, once you start to sweat it runs down the cable and into the volume control. Mostly this results in the volume suddenly going to maximum, although some times it goes to minimum or stops working altogether. Give it a while to dry out and it's back to normal.
Looking at some forums, this happens a lot.
You can use other headphones but then you can't alter the volume or skip tracks. Tying a loose knot on the control side might work, or wrapping a plaster around it could work, but it looks stupid.

So, in summary, the shuffle is a really good product, but if you want to use it for running or at the gym you'd be better off waiting for the problem to get resolved or third-party headphones to be available.
