3.0 out of 5 stars where are the rest of the LPs and singles ? 28 Oct 2010
By Raimon
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
this is a fine collection, but where are the rest of LPs, like Elephant's Memory, Raga, David Peel, Lon and Derek Van Eaton, Iveys, Shankar, etc ...? all with beatles involved playing or producing, and also why not a complete collection of The Apple Singles A+Bs not included in any LP?, well this is better than nothing

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Reasons For What Is Missing 12 May 2012
By Skeet9
Format:Audio CD
Hello All,

What's included in this box is a great variety of superb music, some with much help from a Beatle or two or three; plus some appearances by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Steven Stills, Ginger Baker, Ray Charles (!) and others. Many tracks have no hands-on Beatle help but are still excellent, highly enjoyable music. The box focuses on the large amount of fine music released by Apple Records from 1968-1974 by artists other than by the Beatles or John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr solo material. The purpose of the rest of this review is to shed a little light on what was originally released by Apple, but isn't included in this box set.

The Iveys (early Badfinger) 1992 cd "Maybe Tomorrow" and Badfinger's 2010 "Magic Christian Music" cd share 12 tracks. These 12 on "Magic Christian Music" 2010 are remixed, alternate and mono versions of the tracks from "Maybe Tomorrow". Disc 16, exclusive to this box set, contains mono versions of 'Dear Angie', 'Think About the Good Times', 'No Escaping Your Love', and 'Yesterday Ain't Coming Back'.

The 9 tracks *only* on the "Maybe Tomorrow" '92 cd are these in stereo: 'See-Saw Granpa', 'Think About the Good Times', 'Yesterday Ain't Coming Back', 'Sali Bloo', 'I've Been Waiting', 'And Her Daddy's a Millionaire' (original version, '92 mix), 'No Escaping Your Love'. In mono: 'Mrs. Jones' ('92 mix), and 'Looking For My Baby' ('92 mix). So this box set excludes *any* version of only one Ivey's song, 'Looking For My Baby'. Whew! Clear? Then explain it to me.

Mary Hopkin's Those Were the Days was also released on cd in the UK, 1995. It had some of the "pop music" songs of which Mary has made clear she was not too fond, and are not included in this box set. These songs are: 1.

Lo and Behold it finally happened. Thank the Apple Gods for this miracle. (Thank the Fabs for the miracle of Apple!) One of the best, most eclectic music collections of all time with 10-star albums of true brilliance such as Lomax, Troy, Hopkin - Earth Song and MJQ plus the great Tavener, Radha Krsna Temple, Preston and Taylor albums and of course two Badfinger classics. The re-mastering job is bloody amazing, vastly superior to the previous CDs from 1991. Not to mention special guest musicians/artists scattered throughout: Harrison, McCartney, Starr, Lennon, Clapton, Donovan, Stephen Stills, Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voorman, Danny Thompson, Dave Cousins, Tony Visconti and more. !!
The proverbial icing on the proverbial cake is the "Thingumybob" single and the Ronnie Spector single "Try Some Buy Some", first time ever on CD. Hallelujah!
However, three annoying omissions:
-the b-side of "Thingumybob", the Black Dyke Mills cover of "Yellow Submarine"
-b-side of "Try Some Buy Some": "Tandoori Chicken"
-Ravi Shankar single "Joi Bangla"
None of these have ever been released on CD (Note, the Shankar b-side "Oh Bhagawan" was released in the Shankar 4 CD box In Celebration). Why were they not included on either the Best of Apple CD or the bonus CD? Baffling. These are all great songs and vinyl sounds so noisy so digital versions are very needed.
So let's pray to the Apple Gods for these three pieces to get a CD/digital release.
Regardless, this box set is an essential item.
Amen.

4.0 out of 5 stars OPEN YOUR 'BOX' 25 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
as an avid Apple collector since the late 60s, i was really looking forward to receiving this box set.
Unforunately, the 'box' is nothing more than a flimsy thin cardboard carton with a tuck in lid, which will tear very easily..........i was expecting a rigid card box. poor compared with the lavish lennon signature box.
Not easy to remove a single cd for fear of tearing...easier to tip them all out
However, the mini albums are all very nice, each complete with informative booklets, and the extras discs are great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Apple in a box 27 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Seeing as my first review has been 'blocked' by someone at Amazon I'll try again (Why?!) This is a collection of 2010 re-masters of some of the LP's released by that label between 1968 - 1974.
On the plus side the set works out quite cheaply per disc (there's 17 CD's in here) & we have new sleeve notes, some new photos & the previously mentioned new remastering.
On the minus side, as a previous reviewer has mentioned, the receptacle that holds all the CD's is akin to a small cornflake box in its rigidity. You need to be very careful when handling this. Also an extra booklet with maybe a UK/US discography and some extra photos wouldn't go amiss. I'd be quite happy to pay an extra £5-10 for a rigid box & an extra booklet, but I don't work for Apple so it's not up to me! For another few pounds on top of that maybe a DVD with some Apple promo films, etc.? Oh well, that's what I would have done but there you go.
In conclusion, nice to see all these available again but marred by a flimsy box. Maybe I could try and make my own unique wooden box to hold them all in (...now there's an idea!)
