I presume that this novel falls into the bracket of lyrical prose. Much of it written in the present tense and with direct speech but no real structure to it. It may be my fault for not enjoying it more but I have read a few of the Little Toller books on nature writing including Four Hedges by Claire Leighton, Through the Woods by H E Bates and In the Country by Kenneth Allsop. This one was the most disappointing. The others did not meander in the way Apple Acre did. Much may depend on whether you like this sort of book but for me it did not reach the standard of the others.
