A highly anticipated edition to the apparat collection has arrived, here, in the form of a dj mix. As a producer, their are few as talented and original as Sascha Ring (a.k.a Apparat), whose dark, melodic, yet gritty electronic sound has become incresingly orchestral over the last 5 years.
As a dj, Apparat has also proven his worth. This set is extremely intelligent. somehow, he fits 24 tracks into a single 70-80 minute set, something very few djs attempt. Most tracks last under 4 minutes, yet flow effortlessly together. The sound is deep, haunting, with melodic and more rythmic moments which takes the listener on an interesting journey. The tracks are simply superb. All of the tunes produced by apparat himself included in this mix are first class, but the outstanding moments for me would be Telefon Tel Aviv's 'Lengthening shadows' and Pantha Du Prince's 'Welt Am Draht' (which is, for me, the tune of the year).
If you're familiar Apparat's productions, don't fear that you will be disappointed by his dj sets, this really is first class. Whilst 'Walls', 'Multifunctionsbene' and his peel session remain my favourite of his catalogue, this is still one of the finest albums of the year, and perhaps the only dj mix to match Michael Mayer's 'Immer 3', which was, for me, undoubtedly the mix of the year prior to hearing this.
