Exceptional set 29 Oct 2010
Format:MP3 Download|Amazon Verified Purchase
A highly anticipated edition to the apparat collection has arrived, here, in the form of a dj mix. As a producer, their are few as talented and original as Sascha Ring (a.k.a Apparat), whose dark, melodic, yet gritty electronic sound has become incresingly orchestral over the last 5 years.

As a dj, Apparat has also proven his worth. This set is extremely intelligent. somehow, he fits 24 tracks into a single 70-80 minute set, something very few djs attempt. Most tracks last under 4 minutes, yet flow effortlessly together. The sound is deep, haunting, with melodic and more rythmic moments which takes the listener on an interesting journey. The tracks are simply superb. All of the tunes produced by apparat himself included in this mix are first class, but the outstanding moments for me would be Telefon Tel Aviv's 'Lengthening shadows' and Pantha Du Prince's 'Welt Am Draht' (which is, for me, the tune of the year).

If you're familiar Apparat's productions, don't fear that you will be disappointed by his dj sets, this really is first class. Whilst 'Walls', 'Multifunctionsbene' and his peel session remain my favourite of his catalogue, this is still one of the finest albums of the year, and perhaps the only dj mix to match Michael Mayer's 'Immer 3', which was, for me, undoubtedly the mix of the year prior to hearing this.

This album demonstrates that there really are talented DJ/producers still releasing quality in a time of commercial critical mass. Apparat manages to blend styles and take you on a goold old fashioned 'journey'. Sorry to sound cliched but it really is what a good mix is all about. You cannot just listen to snippets it must be consumed as a whole. Great stuff and this will be listened to time and time again. I also feel this will age extremely well unlike 90% of mixes that are released.

I love they way DJ Kicks operate, they certainly pick specialised artists out and often get astonishingly good results and this is no exception.

Why then only give it 4 stars, especially when everyone else has given it 5? Consistency..... The start, middle and end of this album are brilliant but there are points in between which don't quite live up to expectation. It's really just the odd track like Luke Abbot's "More Room" and the Cosmin TRG track.

The beginning then, starts infectiously. Apparat's own "Circles" is marvellously funky and blends handsomely with 69's track "Rushed". Telefon Tel Aviv slows the pace a little and really adds an international feel. Apparat's interlude slows it down more with some haunting melodies but by the time we get to Oval's "Legendary" I'm really looking for something to pick up the beat.

Good job we're starting the middle section of the album then... Some nice percussive numbers up the tempo and mood again and lead well into something deep and dark from Ripperton. Love it.

Such a shame that the dark beats are broken by some DnB that sounds like it's had a bad smartie.

Four Tet fortunately bring it back with a great laid back track with harmonised vocal sounds. This leads in to the much lauded Pantha du Prince track - very laid back beats.

All this and you've only got to track 13!

There's plenty more to discover on Apparat's journey, including great tracks from Burial, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison and also more from the main man himself.

This album, as a whole, is a great addition to your musical library.
