5.0 out of 5 stars medeival england brought to life, 6 Feb 2006

In the first of the Owen archer series Candace Robb brings medieval York to life. She paints such a vivid picture of life that you can almost smell the surroundings, and by the time that you are halfway through the book its characters almost feel like a member of the family. The book is an easy read but yet remains a fantastic murder mystery.Apothecary Rose not only leads you through the lives of an apothecary and his family but also mixes court life and that of the powerful archbishop of York.An excellant read and one that can be read time and time again as I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read !, 25 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Apothecary Rose (Owen Archer Mysteries) (Paperback)
Having just finished the "Warlord Chronicals" by Bernard Cornwell I was wondering if I could find another author that could captivate my imagination in the way that Cornwell did and, suprise, suprise Candace Robb surpassed my expectations, her books are interesting, well researched, with great story lines.I have since read all her books to date and none of them have slipped below the excellent standards she set in this the first. It really begs the question of how an American can produce an historical novel set in York,England in the 1360's with such Authority, can anybody recommend an author as good as Ms Robb for this sort of novel?

5.0 out of 5 stars Cadfael refined, 9 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Apothecary Rose (Owen Archer Mysteries) (Paperback)
Robb has proved himself better than his obvious inspiration Ellis Peters, and repeatedly delivers books which verify his standards. Perhaps most importantly of all, the stories always function on several levels. The Apothecary Rose is no different. The ubiquitous murder-mystery is present, as is the romance novel, and elements of the historical novel.

I read the book two years, ago, but still occaisionally find parts of it in my thoughts now. Most importantly of all, for most readers, it shows that all important signature of a good novel; the temerity to order you not to discard it, but to keep reading (and hang everything else).
