Book Description

1 Oct 2003
Under the pretence of defending an obscure treatise by a Catalan theologian, Montaigne attacks the philosophers who attempt rational explanations of the universe and argues for a sceptical Christianity based squarely on faith rather than reason. The result is the Apology for Raymond Sebond, a classic of Counter-Reformation thought and a masterpiece of Renaissance literature. This new translation achieves both accuracy and fluency, conveying at once the nuances of Montaigne's arguments and his distinctive literary style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly provocative and enormously influential text. 10 Jan 2013
By J. M. Woody - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Montaigne's Apology For Raymond Sebond stands as a crucial turning point in the history of European thought. He turned the Renaissance appropriation of Classic texts back upon itself to justify the counter reformation. But his argument undermines itself by championing the skeptical doubts that would provoke Western thought for the next four centuries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Translation Poorly Printed 20 Nov 2012
By D. Green - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have several translations of Apology and decided to buy Ariew and Grene's because it appears to be the most accessible. Unfortunately, I have had to return two copies of the paperback edition because the ink was too faint. I'll be happy to try again once Hackett starts producing legible copies of the work and stops skimping on printing costs. I hope others have better luck than I had and don't have to spend time going to the post office to return books that shouldn't have been sold in the first place.
