5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Read, 2 Dec 2004
The guy writing below is being unutterably cynical. I've read this book, I thought it was fantastic. If you've ever had suspicions about the way mainstream psychiatry tends to function, reading this book will confirm all those suspicions, and back them up by outlining an alternative (langian) approach that is so simple and obviously correct that you'll never want to go to any other kind of therapist. In a nutshell, it has to do with the idea of creating a place in therapy where the patient feels sufficiently comfortable that their true selves will eventually surface, perhaps for the first time. There are many refreshing ideas put forward, for example that the standard practice of, say, not accepting a gift from a patient, or making convoluted 'interpretations' just because a patient asks for a drink, will only contribute to their sense of alienation.
There are parts of the book that might seem hard to believe but the results he consistently achieves in his patients speak for themselves (and I know him to be a genuine therapist, and not just some crank, as the other reviewer seems to imply). If there is to be any kind of future at all for the human race, you'll find it's seeds in Walden, Bill Hicks, and stuff like this.

It is the most pathetic excuse for a book, it should be burnt. I would never waste my time reading such shallow literature again. The man is a nut, surely?
