From Amazon.co.uk

NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

Ron Howard's Oscar-winning take on the Apollo 13 story. The mission, manned by astronauts Lovell (Tom Hanks), Swigert (Kevin Bacon) and Haise (Bill Paxton), starts out as a routine spaceflight which generates little media interest. But all that changes when an oxygen tank explosion cripples the ship and prompts the immortal line, 'Houston ... we have a problem'. Now Lovell and his crew have to struggle to keep going, while at Mission Control their colleagues Kranz (Ed Harris) and Mattingly (Gary Sinise) do everything they can to bring them home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent bonus material 1 Jun 2006
Format:DVD
We all know how good this film is. But what you may not know is how good the bonus material is. There are interviews with the real astronauts and recording of the actual radio transmitions from Apollo 13. Many of these were used to help with the script.

The film - 5 Stars

The extras - 5 Stars

4.0 out of 5 stars A truly human story despite all the technology 1 Sep 2009
By Emanon
Format:DVD
APOLLO 13 is one of those films you either love or hate, and how you respond to it seems to depend on how important you feel that the story of humanity's quest to reach out into space actually is. However, as a fictionalized account of a true story about trying to survive against all the odds there's precious little to beat it.

The semi-documentary style is a really effective way to tell the story and as such gives a lot of technical insight into the fascinating story of America's quest to put men on the moon. The attention to detail in the production design is phenomenal with both mission control and the spacecraft hardware being recreated in loving detail. Sadly, such meticulous attention to detail cannot extend to some of the finer points of the script because the nature of telling a five day story in just over two hours means that the scriptwriters by necessity have to play around a little with - and add "drama" to - the actual events and personalities involved. Whether such a compelling story needs drama adding to it is debateable, but I suppose that that's just part of the art of moviemaking. In-flight disagreements, dream sequences and the fact that a number of outstanding members of the NASA staff are compressed into fewer characters, are all examples of liberties made to make the story more "cinematic", but despite that, all the essentials of what remains a truly human story despite all the technology are still there and you are left with a vivid and lasting impression of what happened during what many consider to be NASA's "finest hour".

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favourites! 19 Jan 2004
Format:DVD
This is one of my favourite movies! Starring Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon and an all star cast. It has been less than a year since man first walked on the moon, but as far as the american public were concerned, Apollo 13 was just another 'routine' space flight. Until these words peirced the imense void of space: 'Houston we have a problem'. stranded 205,000 miles from Earth in a crippled Spacecraft astronauts Jim Lovell (Hanks) Fred Haise (Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Bacon) fight a desperate battle to survive. Flight director Gene Kranz (Ed Harris) and a heroic ground crew race againt time-and the odds- to bring the 3 men home. It's a breathtaking adventure that tells a story of courage, faith, and ingenuity thats all the more remarkable becuse it is true! The special effects are pretty darn cool. I can't believe that none of the footage of the liftoff is completely original. If you want to demonstrate the power of your home system, this is the chapter for you. Its got amazing sound and visuals. I also love the fact that in the interior spacecraft scenes they are actually floating around in there, and not held up by wires (They did this using a KC-135 weightless environment aircraft). It definitely adds more credibility to this film. The movie is overall fantastic accomopainied by great music from James Horner(who did Titanic and the Perfect Storm). In my opinion, anyone who likes great movies or who is interested in space flight or adventure SHOULD BUY THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!! You won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the greatest films of all time 11 Jan 2004
Format:DVD
of all of the films I have ever seen, this has to simply be the best. It has action, adventure, and induces sadness and happiness. Definately one to watch, repeatedly! If you are interested in space, the moon, astronauts, NASA, or just in having a good time, this is the film for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gripping stuff 15 Mar 2000
Format:VHS Tape
This film isn't quite as good to watch on video as it is in the cinema, because much of its effect is gained from the spectacle of wide open space. Tom Hanks is the big star here, proving his Oscar-winning star quality yet again - but his contribution is upstaged by a great vomiting-in-space moment, which is uniquely disgusting! You'll remain gripped your seats into the final moments of this film, while the crew struggle to land before their air supply is exhausted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite exceptional 4 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I have lost count how many times I have seen this film - I love it! The story of Apollo 13 is well-known and to see the film brings home the peril the astronauts were in. This film has you on the edge of your seat all the way through. I have a copy of the book LOST MOON by Lovell which I will start reading very soon. No doubt there are discrepencies but we have to allow Ron Howard that privelidge though - after all, look what he gave us! Excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars First rate 28 Nov 2007
By Videot
Format:HD DVD
I've always liked this film, which vividly reconstructs an incredible, nail-biting event in modern history, and so was keen to see it on HD DVD. This HD transfer is a very good one, producing pin-sharp pictures and excellent colour grading, putting it on a par quality-wise with the HD DVD releases of "Total Recall" and "2001: A Space Odyssey".
