A great film with a fantastic score so what happened to the soundtrack album?
Well, while I know there was some source music with the tape player on Apollo 13 in some scenes, the music did not need to be included: Spirit in the Sky, Night Train, Somebody to Love etc. These tracks do not really fit in with the rest of the score.
Then there's the dialogue from the film; if I wanted the dialogue, I'd watch the film! A soundtrack doesn't tell the story, it enhances the story so don't put the dialogue in.
Having said all that, the music written specially for the film by James Horner is superb, if it was only this music (which is what I bought the album for) I'd have given 5 stars. The trumpets and the drums in particular are superb and so haunting, almost like The Last Post, sad yet uplifting at the same time.
I know what I will be doing: copying the best bits to my ipod and forget the rest. A shame really as it could have been so good.
