From Amazon.co.uk

NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon

Once again , my review is about the Blu-Ray and not the film its self..
I was a little duboius at fist as this film has allot of old NASA film stock cut into the film and mixing that with moden filmstock would give obvoius drawbacks when creating a perfect 1080 P picture that runs smoothly.
That said , I ate my words because this transfur is indeed close to perfection..
The resolution has been sharpend to a tee and the the colour looks vibrant catching the time period of the 1960's Eastman colour used in almost all moives and polaroids of that time.
The space effects now look sharper and REAL , with deeper backs and moon shots better than any genuine image taken through-out the late 1960's and early 70's.
Allot of work has gone into improoving the final print and it works.
The sound also is crisp with the now standard DTS HD master , then given the 5.1 domestic finshing to set your frontroom wall shaking during "blast off"..!

But for me the detail in costume and prop's always gives me the most pleasure , the fabrics weave can be seen in the sweaters ,and even the time can be clearly seen on all of the lovely OMEGA watch's worn by the crew and NASA staff.
I great movie improoved to a FANTASTIC movie , worth the money and the 1080 treatmant !!

Without doubt this Blu ray transfer is a worthy purchase over the still excellent standard DvD but the picture quality is not faultless.

I was very impressed though when i was able to read every word that had been written on their checklist that had been fastened to the Command module dashboard, that can only be achieved through a successful 1080HD transfer.

Also the dials on their Omega Speedmasters were quite clear, but the picture quality is not a triumph like the stunning BluRay transfer of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which is still amongst the finest ive seen to date.

Unlike certain other Blu ray discs this is one that enhances the already brilliant Ron Howard film but if the picture quality is not quite faultless the sound reproduction is supreme.

Dialogue and other sounds especially the flicking of switches onboard the symulator and Space craft are crystal clear and maybe i am a being a little too critical on the picture quality but this Blu Ray disc is ALMOST perfect.

Is it worth buying over the superb standard Dvd offering, well if you own a Blu ray machine and know the film well i can throughly reccommend buying this Blu Ray disc.

It's not quite up there with the likes of Zulu or Once Upon A Time in The West for picture quality but Sony Paramount have certainly gone to great efforts to produce a Blu Ray transfer worthy of the original film.

Maybe Blu ray perfection is unobtainable but for deep space cinematography there will be few if any Blu ray films as good as this version of Apollo 13.

2.0 out of 5 stars pointless blu ray version 12 May 2013

if you havent seen the film yet, do it. great film accurate and good performances.
but if you do buy it on disc, get the dvd. the picture and sound on the blu ray is no better, and the blu ray version as a whole is a big disappointment.
