Biography

How often nowadays do we read of an artist's "intensity", or their rhetorical, one-of-a-kind individuality? Journalistic hyperbole routinely contorts the mundane into the "epic", the tired into the inspired, all the while heaping praise on performers as seemingly vacuous and generic as possible. Navigating the landscape of contemporary alternative music can be an ... Read more in Amazon's Chelsea Wolfe Store

Product Description

CD Packaging: Digipak, Vinyl Standard 12 LP + download card. Sargent House is excited to re-issue both of Chelsea Wolfe's first two albums, The Grime and The Glow and Apokalypsis, on CD and LP for the first time. Chelsea Wolfe's sound is best described with broad strokes: elemental, intense, radiant, ancient yet modern, intimate yet expansive, dark and sparkling. Hues of black metal and deep blues inform her ever-evolving electric folk a warm force that wraps itself around the listener, encouraging uplift, seeking triumph. Her voice similarly haunts and soothes, with words that illuminate life's darker corners in order to reveal the unlikely truth and beauty hidden within. Originally hailing from Northern California, Wolfe's formative years were spent tinkering in her country musician father's home studio, however, she long lacked the confidence to share her work. Then, in 2009, an overseas excursion as part of a nomadic performance troupe ignited her passion for performing and initiated a renewed interest in writing and recording. After performing in cathedrals, basements and old nuclear plants to whoever would listen, she returned home with a new drive. She began toting around an 8-track and recording as the mood hit, eventually editing her findings into a breathtaking debut album, 2010's The Grime & the Glow. Marrying the gentle intimacy of folk, the atmospheric voodoo of death rock, and the bleak, sullen nihilism of black metal, Wolfe's sound effectively cast a genre all her own: a cavernous rumble, marked by stuttering drums, ethereal synths, and a wash of guitar, all very much in the service of one of the most hypnotic, celestial voices in modern music. Described as both healing and harrowing, enchanting and narcotic, the album established Wolfe as a force on the rise. Inspired, Wolfe then relocated to Los Angeles and recorded her second album, 2011's Apokalypsis, which found her in an actual studio with her live band. The songs captured therein maintained the strikingly visceral elements of her debut, further showcase Wolfe's unique songwriting ability, while adding a serious heaviness of sound that balanced eloquently with her transcendent voice. Its release was subsequently met with critical adoration, and rightly landed on numerous best of 2011 lists.

dark atmosphere. dirgeing repetition. hauntingly tuned.
i listened to nothing else for a few days. all tracks are good but some are more good - songs that will go in my all time favourite lists. if you like pj harvey, the cure, early dark cocteaus and the like, you'll like this. there is no light or effervescence, no chinks or compromise - it sets out a path and it stays on it - beautiful.

Although the music is difficult to define, Chelsea Wolfe excels in creating dark atmospheres, drone-like suppression and gothic soundscapes. All this sonic diversity is unified by her characteristic, ethereal voice which sticks out like a sore thumb in a world saturated with ordinary voices and middle-of-the-road sounds.

Brilliant new artist. Ordered and received both of her cd's plus tee shirt and poster. Just found out about this artist from a friend and can't stop listening to her. Keep your nuts and support the artist by ordering off her website.

After hearing positive reviews of this album I decided to illegally download it, having heard it, I would literally sell my left nut to get this CD. I don't care how much it costs, I want this, and the fact I can find nowhere that sells it, is agony. This should perhaps give you an idea of how good an album it is.

HOW AM I JUST HEARING THIS? 7 Sept. 2012

If Leslie Feist is Glenda the Good Witch, then Chelsea Wolfe must be shopping for stripey socks and monkey flea balm. Thats the most obvious comparison that springs to mind, if Feist is busy knitting a winter sweater out of leaves and autumnal breezes, then Ms. Wolfe must be sculpting a Gibson SG out of black tar and longing ..listen to "Tall Tracks(Bodies )" a couple of times and see if you don't sing it to yourself for days...I mean, "we could be two straight lines in a crooked world"? Awesome.

Black is my heart. 1 Nov. 2011
By Seth Mcarron - Published on Amazon.com
Chelsea Wolfe really redefines what it means to be `dark' in the music industry. This is not to say that what she does is particularly grim or dreadful, she really inspires beauty in the dark voids she inhabits, like a blackened angel. But she does this in an accessible way that is more internally rather than externally affecting. Her gloomy voice gently looms over each composition, slowly infusing itself with the music, as if Chelsea herself is embracing that darkness that afflicts her. It's Gothic in a rather 21st Century way. I'm sure this album will attract it's share of naysayers shouting from a rulebook of what is or isn't truly Gothic. But the fact of the matter is that Chelsea Wolfe, whether she binds herself to her genre claims or not, is creating harrowing music, product of a gloomy soul. Just try to listen to `Pale on Pale' or `Movie Screen' without feeling a stirring sense of blackness and oblivion in your heart. And if evoking those kind of emotions in the listener isn't a feat of truly Gothic music, then what exactly is?

disturbed avant-garde moments of Gothic soul reflection 3 May 2012
By Charlie Quaker - Published on Amazon.com
3rd release from Los Angeles artist--haunted avant-garde moments from the level of Hell where
beauty & innocence are disguised and perverted as beckoning black-clad sirens, undulating to
the rhythm of disturbed rock time. The press calls it "doom-drenched electric (Goth) folk".
These eerie songs/chants/sounds calmly & coldly explore the nature and essence of creepy
celestialism--a journey through a gorgeously hypnotic atmosphere, where slow-dancing angels
are gaunt & grey with hazy, bloodshot eyes riveted to your spirit. A dangerously interesting
opium twist/float through deceivingly gentle, thick spaces. Sometimes reminiscent of Zola
Jesus, Swans/Jarboe, Gazelle Twin, EMA, Passarella Death Squad, Esben and the Witch.

Creepy and Fantastic! 3 Aug. 2013

I found this record because I liked the album art. I previewed the album and took a chance on it. I really, really like it. It's exactly what I expected. Creepy, haunted and atmospheric. This would be great on a dark, cold night with a glass of red wine.
