5.0 out of 5 stars The Hammer of Hell hammers 12 Mar 2003
Format:Audio CD
After I began losing interest in Venom, around 1984, I picked up a vinyl copy of "Apocalyptic Raids", which I eventually wore out. Never had I heard anything like this! This music is so raw, so brutal, but best of all, so riveting! It will not be appreciated by everyone, since it is technically rather simple and crudely repetitive, with an ample amount of moans and groans, and the vocals are almost 100% incomprehensible. However, it is the energetic creation of a youthful Tom Gabriel Fischer (a.k.a. Tom Warrior), who actually did a naively, masterful job with these tracks. They seem to be the only studio recordings that Hellhammer ever made. That is unfortunate, because this band is one of the first Doom/Death metal bands, one step beyond Black metal, and the music is so primitively interesting, while paving the way for the extreme metal bands yet to appear (just as Presley's Sun recordings led to rock 'n' roll).
Although I can write many words about this disc, I will never be able to do it justice. The listener must decide on his own. However, I will end with this thought: if we assume that "good" art is memorable, while "bad" art is forgettable, then this music is spectacular. You will never forget it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 'Hammer heard 'round the world! 24 Jan 2013
Format:Vinyl
I don't think words can accurately describe the impact this mini album had on the extreme metal scene. Ironically the band were influenced by Venom even amending their slogan of 'home taping is killing music... so are Venom!' to their own 'Venom are killing music... Hellhammer are killing Venom!':) But by putting their own spin on that influence (bending guitar notes, deeper more brutal vocals, etc.) they created something that arguably became as influential as anything Venom did. Many death metal bands have been influenced by Hellhammer (Slaughter & Cianide spring to mind) while Apokalyptic Raids, Warhammer & Winter took it a step further emulating Hellhammer very closely. In closing i agree with everything magneticbeast wrote in his review but would like to clarify that this was not Hellhammer's only studio recording. It was the only one professionally released at the tome but the band also cut 3 demos Death Fiend, Triumph of Death & Satanic Rites. The last was released professionally on it's own but all the demos have been released together in recent years & contain lots of songs not heard on this album. By all means get this first and if you like what you hear get the demos to complete your collection. But whatever you do, never forget 'Only Death Is Real!'

5.0 out of 5 stars A Death Metal Diamond to be treasured! 4 Oct 1998
By tmanis3@alltel.net - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
For those of us old enough to appreciate the advent of hardcore death metal, this collection of tracks hails the emergence of the mighty Celtic Frost and the ingenuity of its founder "Tom Warrior". Sorrowfully, the era of Celtic Frost came to a tragic and premature end!!! Nonetheless, these songs epitomize a sense of mysticism and despair of the human condition that, I believe, represents its quite special emotional expression. These songs are intentionally raw and should be appreciated as such. Maybe "Tom Warrior" will suprise us with some original and interesting material with Apollyon's Sun.
