YA post-apocalyptic tale

Fifteen-year-old Abraham "Ham" Jones, a cripple, and Zia Slate, a fourteen-year-old tomboy with an attitude, find themselves unlikely partners in this post-apocalyptic tale of survival. It is decades later since the world blew itself apart. Life is harsh, gangs rule the streets, the system cops keep the peace anyway they can. Being a kid in this world isn't easy, being a cripple is about the worst sentence handed down. Being a girl with no protection is only slightly better.

Ham and Zia's lives are irrevocably changed when they meet a mysterious old man bearing gifts - a cane for Ham and a knife for Zia. But, nothing is as it seems. Everyone wants something and no good deed goes unpunished. Forced into a desperate encounter, they must fight for their lives when it's discovered they now have possession of two of the legendary memory weapons, the very weapons that ultimately destroyed the world.

THE RIGHT PATH is ~13,500 words (54 pages).

Also available in the Dark Future series 3-pack, THE PATH. Read all 3 stories, Path to Destruction, The Right Path and Zia's Path, with a simple 1-click.

The Right Path is a very short novella, introducing the two main characters in what I believe is a larger series.
It takes place in a futuristic warzone, where people survive through violence and theft, following the rule 'Nothing is free'.
Crippled Abraham is given a peculiar cane by an old man. He watches him a moment longer, seeing him give a young woman a blade. Utterly confused by the man's actions, Abraham continues on his way.
Later on, he's cornered by gangsters, and he, along with the girl, realises the power of the objects they were given. From there it all goes crazy!

I like this novella. The characters are very likeable - I love the darkness of the city and the way in which enemies are portrayed as less than nothing. Ham and Zia's Camaraderie is inspiring, and it definitely makes you curious as to what happens next.

My only issue with this is the length. A good story should never be rushed, and I found that the entire premise was over in three pages. Had it been done more thoroughly, I'd gladly read a full-length novel of this story, but as it is, it's really only a prologue to what seems to be a very well-written and intriguing series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice short read 6 Jan 2012

This is a very short story about a world devestated by war where everyone has to fight for basics like food and water.A crippled boy and a fiesty girl become unlikely friends after meeting an old man with a shopping trolley full of tresures that could be sold or exchanged for food.So why does he give Aberham Jones and Zia Slate weapons that could change their lives? After learning the hard way that the weapons hold the essence of their past owners they decide to search for the old man. He tells them the reason why he gave them the gifts and asks for their help to bring order to a broken world.
The story just ends after a nasty fight with a street gang and i was left feeling a bit dissapointed as i was getting to like this unruley pair.Saying that i did enjoy this short story which wetted my apetite for the book 'Path Of Destruction'where we can find out how these weapons were made and why.The full story is out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Novella 23 Feb 2012

Good novella I found on www.amazon.co.uk for free.
Rather clichéd scenario and world-building when it comes to describing post-apocalyptic surroundings but other than that a fun story with well-rounded characters.
Reading this I was reminded of 'Warehouse 13' and the artefacts they have to find in the show. Memory weapons are such a good and cool idea!
