"Saigon. Shit, I'm still only in Saigon." So begins Francis Ford Coppola's epic journey down the rivers of the Vietnam War into a world paralysed by rationalised insanity and ritual murder. The horror of this alternate reality is scrutinised on this collection, which contains not only the film's score, written by the director and his father, but also a hefty portion of the original dialogue and sound design of the film. And frankly, the most chilling and absorbing part of the film is Captain Willard's weary yet brilliantly evocative narration on the absurd, plus Colonel Kurtz's free-associated meditations on death, snails crawling across straight razors and more death. While Coppola's score is less over-the-top than the dialogue, it still makes the listener shiver. Much of the music is akin to a Vangelis score with added spleen: vicious, shimmering washes of synthesiser with notes waiting to cave inward like a circus big-top tent on fire, as in the bedlam of "Do Lung Bridge". Toss in The Doors' violent hedonism on "The End", tribal war drumming and a word or two from both Wagner and Flash Cadillac and you have your own audio journey into the heart of darkness. Format:Audio CD
This soundtrack, alongside Easy Rider, brought about the rock soundtrack as we know it today. Every film director pays homage to it, especially to the classic Doors track 'The End'. This CD is extra-special, with added commentary from the film, including Marlon Brando ramblings and the classic 'Napalm in the Morning' speech. Classic stuff.

The great thing about this particular 2 disc version is the vocal inclusion. Right from the start of the story with the eerie & haunting huey rotor blades flying around the room in stereo, through the unsettling (both musically & lyrically) 'The End', all the way up the river, passing through Kilgore's territory, gliding through into Kurtz's dark revelations & to the point of his life's violent close by one of his own comrades - Willard converses with the characters & narrates as if you were by his side on this unforgettable journey of no return. It is a journey of intense discovery & the music brings to life the soundscapes that Willard experiences on his way up river. You won't be disappointed!

Carmine Coppola has created the greatest soundtrack for his son, Francis, with his wonderful score for APOCALYPSE NOW. 'The End' (Cut from 12 minutes down to 6 and a half) is a masterful choice, starting the film as it means to go on, and my personal favourite is 'Do Lung', the most eerie, atmospheric and powerful piece on the whole disc (Best heard with the stereo up and the housemates out), which brings back memories of what I think is the best scene in the entire film. Definitely one for the fans, though.
