At first I prepared myself to be disappointed by this book. Although I have read and enjoyed many of Hilary Green's books, this one was different. While most of her books are set during one of the world wars, and written in third person with a relatively vast cast of characters, this one was set between 1955-1999, written most in first person and also written mostly in present tense which has always annoyed me when I'm reading. Don't know why but it does. So one lazy morning I picked this book up saying I had to give it a chance, as the author has always captivated me with her other novels and I should give her a chance. Worst case at least I could say I tried. Before I knew it I was over halfway through the book and the lazy morning had passed virtually unnoticed into the afternoon. For the first time in months I can say I finished a book in a day, and almost in one sitting. Hilary Green certainly knows how to tell a story and my concerns, or complaints were quickly swept away. Though not set during a world war, it is hardly set during a peaceful time or place in history either. I was fascinated to read about the history of Cyprus, my prior knowledge of the island being a documentary about UN peacekeepers and a couple of travel shows. While the characters were all well drawn out, Cressida will remain with me for a long time. She was someone I was able to relate to on many levels and it will be hard to forget her anytime soon. This novel never let up on the drama, just when you thought things were slowing down something else would happen and I kept turning the pages to see how it would all end. So I am pleased to say that once again I was treated to a wonderfully written novel from the pen of Hilary Green and she has once again left me wanting more and eagerly awaiting her next book.

This was such a good book. I've read her Follies series which I absolutely enjoyed so when I saw this I thought I'd give it a go.
I was gripped and couldn't put it down. I didn't really know the ins and outs of history of Cyprus but after reading this I was on the Internet wanting to find out more!

This is the kind of book that you can't wait to finish as you want to know what happens but that paradoxically is so good that you don't want to finish it. I have been fascinated by the history of Cyprus ever since visiting many years ago. This book is so smoothly written that it barely seems fictional. The places and the era are so well brought alive and I loved the way it tells the story from 1974 to the present. One or two of the twists are perhaps predictable but in no way does this spoil the enjoyment. I will be reading more from this author.

It was a Book that I would read at Three a.m . when I couldn't sleep ...there are not many of those around .The Story unfolded in such a way that the reader has no Idea where the Story line would end up .Twists and turns ,with beautiful descriptions of Cyprus as it was in the 50s .Now I am familiar with the History , and the events that took place during that time .
I would have liked the Story Line to continue ,as for me ,it came to an abrupt end , and could have savoured a lot more intrigue .

This story was so real to me, you see I too served national service on the wonderful island of Cyprus. I was fortunate to be there when independence was brought in, peaceful times, but this very descriptive book brought back so many memories of the island and its people. Thank you Hilary for your knowledge and such detail of the northern area and the love shown in all the books characters. Excellent read for an ex NS. man.

Like Aphrodite herself, the island of Cyprus exercises its lazy charm over us in this intriguing novel. Our heroine is paying a recuperative visit to the island, once her childhood home, to get over her mother's recent death, and to boost her health. Whilst here she is haunted by childhood memories, and the disappearance of her father from her life, she also falls for a Turkish suitor.

The descriptions of the islands beauty are haunting, as is the mystery surrounding the heroine's early life and memories, and the source of her health problems. We are gripped by suspense as she grapples with all these problems, and the mysteries are finally cleared up. A very satisfying read.

ithis was the first book I have read set in the Cypriot wars.I enjoyed the story which is basically a love story but I found the references to the troubles experienced by all sides in the Cypriot uprising s particularly interesting as they were in my living memory.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more than romance in a novel.

Was recommended this as a good read from Hilary's newsletter. I generally prefer WW2 fiction and Hilary has done this genre superbly. Despite this not being my usual era I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was reluctant to put it down. Can't wait for her next offering
