Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Aphrodite, in Russell Andrews' new switchback of a thriller, is a secret over which people will kill and kill again. The book starts with a string of deaths--a Washington intern who is having an affair, a philosopher specialising in social ethics, and a reporter who started checking up on some mistakes she made in a movie star's obituary--that seem to have nothing whatsoever in common. Westwood, the cop who finds himself investigating the dead journalist, really wants it to be an accident--he has things in his past that make him not want ever again to be a serious policeman--but he finds clues, and then he finds a witness--the dead woman's yoga-instructor. At that point, his troubles really begin.

Andrews is fascinating when writing about the secret so important that people have to die for it, but the real interest of the book is in Westwood and the process whereby he stretches, and starts using again, an intellect, a physical toughness and a capacity for ruthlessness with which he really thought he was done for good. The mystery is inventive enough--but Andrews makes us care about his hero and the woman he finds himself protecting. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Aphrodite is a really good read as long as you don't think too hard or analyse too much. I sped through it in a few days and found it easy and entertaining reading. A few niggly things - Andrews leaves the characters in the dark to the extent that, when things need explanation, he has to resort to pages and pages of report-style clarification which breaks the flow of the book rather; a very minor but nonetheless annoying factual inaccuracy - the character drives from Luton to round the M25 to Devon and has lunch in Oxford!; and the justification for the violence and killing (and basically the entire story) is only briefly touched upon and, to my mind, doesn't really stand up to proper scrutiny. That said, I did really like the book and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as an extremely enjoyable read.

A Strong Thriller 22 July 2006
By Scottish Dave VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I recieved this book as a gift and had never read anything by the author before. After it lay around for best part of a yyear I gave it a go as summer reading. And boy what had I been missing!

I'm a big fan of Dean Koontz and this reminded me a lot of his 1980's books. Lead male character is down on his luck having lost his family. Lead female character is a single parent. They both come together after being dragged into a political/medical conspiracy.

The story is well told and the characters are strong. I'll be tracking down his other books. 9/10.
