  • Our popular Apex Examiner Stereomicroscope has just got even better with angled eyetubes for ease of use and an inclusive specimen collection and dissection kit
  • Other than its price there is nothing cheap about this low power stereomicroscope. Ideal for field use and terrific for introducing the young scientist to microscopy. Reviews prior to 10/9/2014 refer to the original Examiner which this new much improved model replaces.
  • The New Examiner is for looking at whole objects at an overall magnification of x20 and does not need or use microscope slides (our slide kits are therefore not suitable).
  • Standard size widefield x10 eyepieces and a pair of x2 objectives gives a 3D image of specimens of all types.
  • Optical components are achromatic glass lenses, and light is provided by an incident LED unit that is powered by batteries.

Product Description

We have relaunched one of our most popular microscopes to include many improvements. The New Apex Examiner Stereomicroscope now has angled eyetubes to make using the binocular head much more comfortable and we have introduced an inclusive specimen collection and dissection kit. Some of the tools are sharp and children would need supervision from a responsible adult. The New Apex Examiner is a superb portable light weight stereomicroscope, ideal for field use, at the beach or in the garden. The build quality is excellent and the price exceptional. Although this is a light weight instrument it is at the same time robust, and is well able to withstand the rigors of outdoor life. The microscope features include: - Portable and lightweight which is ideal for field use - Optical components with achromatic glass lenses - Widefield x10 eyepieces - Pair of x2 objectives giving an overall magnification of x20, which can be extended to x50 with additional eyepieces that can be purchased as extras. - Integral battery powered LED incident light source with on/off switch - Friction rack focus system - Removable white dissection plate with specimen clamps - Fully adjustable interpupillary distance

I bought this for my 7 year old son as a first microscope.

I read various guides but the most useful hint was NOT to buy too powerful a microscope because we aren't looking at bacteria here, we are looking at dead flies, sticks, stones, frosty leaves, whiskers from the cat (dropped not pulled!), sugar and fluffy bits on the nit comb (is it a nit or is it fluff?? Remarkably useful for parents!). This microscope is perfect for this.

You can hold things under it or fix flat things under the 2 clips to hold them still, you can look at things that aren't remotely flat (like stones), it's fairly robust (gets carted around the house a lot), it has a good light and it's easy to use so the kids can just get on with it on their own without a nagging parent telling them to be careful all the time.

It's the best present I've bought for a long time. And even better, I have quite a lot of fun with it myself when he's out...

When buying a product at the bottom end of the price scale you are prepared that it may not be very good. However, this microscope exceeded all my expectations. It is well made and performs brilliantly. I have used for natural history subjects and the lenses give you a bright image in glorious stereo. The built in light is not terribly powerful but does the job. It is light enough to carry into the field and cheap enough that you don't mind taking it into the field. The magnification is low but enough to open up a whole new world of detail that you can't see with the naked eye. I have no hesitation in recommending this.

I dont usually give out 5 stars unless it is somethig very special...which this is...There's not really anything i can add to the Quality description except to say ...if you have never looked into a stereo microscope before...its worth buying just to look at your fingernails...I garantee you will spend at least an hour looking at them...honest!...I already owned the next in the line desktop microscope from Apex which is how I knew the quality was going to be first rate...so no surprises there...what blew me away and pushed it to the 5 star rating was the price!!!...I bought a kids microscope from a place that sells "toys to us"...and it was the same price but not the same quality...not even close...so if you have ANY reservations about buying this piece of kit DONT...buy it quick before they realise they have accidently marked it too low...good luck Boshy...

I bought this little microscope (my Spanish friends call it a "magnifier" - which essentially it is) in June and have been enjoying it since!

My 8yr old son and I have been using it for all sorts of interesting projects. I just put in my rucksack and go! It's light, small and has it's own power source, perfect for days in the forest, beach or even the local park.

Some of the things we've been looking at include:
1. Butterfly wings
2. All those titchy things you get when you go pond dipping and can't really see
3. Close ups of tadpoles, insects, the hamster etc.
4. Sorting foraminifera from quartz grains in beach sand.
5. Soil, mud, sand, sugar, salt etc. (check out those crystal forms!)
6. Textiles (man made vs cotton, wool ...)
7. All bits of plants (undersides of leaves, wild strawberries, bark...)
8. Rocks and pebbles...

...and the list goes on. Even the mundane can be made super-special by using this little mic!

Hope you can use our ideas and post some of your own to help out other people!

Cxx

I don't normally write a "me too" review, but this product is so good that I would feel guilty if I didn't sing its praises. Ok, so the magnification is not huge compared to a professional tool. Where this comes into its own is on details that are just beyond the human ability to resolve: this excellent tool will give you a big, bright, three dimensional lovely view of those.

If like me you are a bit older now and the eyes can't quite focus like they used to then this device is even more of a must buy for you.

I've just taken up repairing old watches as a hobby, and so far I've used this microscope to get a good look at case hallmarks, even if badly worn. I can also look at the movement while it is working, which is entertaining and educational... isn't it amazing how much dirt and lint is in there, all totally invisible to the unaided eye! I've also found that I can handhold things under the lens, and by passing it beneath the viewer I can just rove over the surface, stopping at any microscopic detail that catches my eye. I can even do some work on the object while viewing it, such as picking off bits of lint, or tightening a tiny screw that I can otherwise barely see.

It's fun, it's surprisingly useful, it's well made, it looks good and it's affordable. What more could you want?

As well as being excellent value for money, the microscope arrived extremely quickly and was very well packaged. My son has spent many very enjoyable hours looking at rocks, crystals, dead insects and also many other general objects around the house. I would recommend the microscope to anyone, as the depth between the magnifier and the viewing plate means that you have a wider range of items you can look at in it and it magnifies very well showing a lot of detail. I am extremely pleased with my purchase. Thank you.
