This microscope was packed very well and delivered in double quick time. I opted for the Free delivery which should take longer, but I ordered this item on Saturday and it arrived on the Monday. Really tip top.

The microscope itself is a robust item that has the feel of a quality instrument and this proved to be reinforced by the performance. This model dose not only come with 2 eyepieces, a 10x and 20x, 3 Objectives, a 4x, 10x and 40x, it also has a whole range of features one would expect from a much more expensive model.

From top to bottom it has, a 360 degree rotating head, mechanical stage with adjustable stop, under-stage Abbe condenser with iris diaphragm and focus control plus filters, coarse and fine focus and adjustable illumination.

Now to performance. The Apex Practitioner dose not disappoint, in fact it impresses. It is made easy to start using the microscope as it is supplied with two sample slides, I do not know if they are the same slides for every instrument but mine came with a Mantis leg and the leg of a Honey Bee. It is worth noting at this point that the package is also supplied with a box of 50 blank slides and a box of cover slips.

As soon as you place one of the sample slides on the stage and peer down the eyepiece, you know this is quality, and it just carries on through the objectives.

I took some time deciding which make and model to go for with my budget of £100, and I am so pleased I opted for this one it will I believe provide me with many years of pleasurable viewing.

If you are a student on a tight budget of a parent wanting to provide your offspring with their first microscope, you will not be going far wrong by purchasing the Apex Practitioner.

Full Marks 18 May 2011
By Jase
I required a microscope to help identify parasites on my Koi.
Originally I tried a National Geographic with objectives upto x1200 magnification. I took it back after several unsuccessful attempts at seeing anything, even from their samples. I turned to Amazon to find something more suitable.

After reading reviews of the Apex I took the plunge. Full marks Amazon - I ordered at 4pm and it had arrived the next day at 10am. After a short read of the instruction manual to find my way around this microscope, I set about testing it out.

Removing it from the packaging, I was very impressed with the quality. It looked sturdy and was obviously built to do a job. I was not disappointed. Images are very clear. I tested the enclosed locust samples and was struck by the clarity. Within minutes I had taken a couple of scrapes from my Koi and could clearly see the body flukes that were causing my fish distress.

The glass slides are not placed under spring clamps but sit securely on the stage held in place by a 'claw'. The stage can be moved backwards and forwards and left to right to allow positioning of the slide. There is a course and a fine focus dial and the mains lamp can be dimmed as required. The contrast can also be adjusted by use of the refractor lever.

Again, very impressed with this equipment and would recommend to anyone - Koi keeper or not.

The only negative point I have now is where to store the additional eyepiece , slides and cover glasses safely as the enclosed polystyrene packaging is not an ideal long term solution.

Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this microscope for my koi pond as I knew they had some kind of parasite on them.
I was sick of treating them with a general purpose parasite killer and see them still sick and
dying . Within 10 minutes of unpacking it I had a scrape done and found costia and skin flooks,
with costia you need 400x , the detail was brilliant watching the skin flooks flipping around.
Very heavy and very easy to use and I can now get a specialised treatment.
