Review

"The action moves relentlessly...setreet-wise, hyper-violent" (Peter Millar, The Times)

"Apaches showcases Carcaterra's ability to create chillingly evil characters and a world horrifying in its depravity" (The Washington Post)

About the Author

Lorenzo Carcaterra was born in New York where he still lives. He was a reporter on the New York Daily News before he wrote his first book of non-fiction, A Safe Place, which recounts how he discovered, at the age of fourteen, that his father had murdered his first wife. Sleepers, which became a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic, tells of the abuse and torture he suffered in a boy's reformatory, and is now a major Propaganda film.

The early 80's and crack cocaine has appeared. Jennifer Santori has disappeared. Her father requests the help of Boomer, an ex-cop with an unquenchable desire to still be working. Boomer brings together ex-cops of the same calibre, who are lost without their badges. Jennifer is found and the search begins for the monster who provided her kidnapper with the crack cocaine. The plot unfolds with violent speed and 'Lucia', the villianess, is drawn out in a bloody and gripping finale.
Not as good as 'A Safe Place' and 'Sleepers', but definitely worth reading.

Maybe this was a first novel written in college and dragged out for publication after the success of sleepers, it's the only explanation I can think of. The flash-backs to the earlier careers of some protagonists had a nice Serpico-style feel to it, but then it just got more and more ludicrous and unbelievable, and the epic finale (complete with flame-throwing underwater gadget as men walk slowly towards well-defended target and produce M60 machine-guns from under long coats (yes that's M60 not M16) was laughable. Would make a bad TV movie.

This book was great. The other reviewers do not like it because its not Sleepers, this is like saying not liking Superman movie Because its not Godfather (both Mario Puzo) both equally awesome but for different reasons. This is well written, character and story driven, emotional in parts and although the end is a bit OTT I found it enjoyable! Worth reading

This book started off in a tedious manner. He starts by describing the background of every cop, and you start to forget the details, as there are so many. Unlikely story line I think, and quite outrageously unbelievable in parts, but moving none-the-less. Worth a read, but not a patch on Sleepers.

This is completely different to Sleepers, yes. BUT, is a great book in it's own right. It's entertaining and the characters are actually quite complex, if you are prepared to get into it. I loved Sleepers too, but it would all get a bit boring if authors stuck to one type of story. This shows Carcaterra's versatility and excellent story telling abilities.

I have read this book along while ago, and decided that I would like to re-read it. I had forgotten how good an author Lorenzo Carcaterra is, I would certainly recommend to any one interested in a good solid read.
