Book Description

29 Jun 2011
Best known for creating CD Baby, the most popular music site for independent artists, founder Derek Sivers chronicles his “accidental” success and failures into this concise and inspiring book on how to create a multi-million dollar company by following your passion. In Anything You Want, Sivers details his journey and the lessons learned along the way of creating CD Baby and building a business close to his heart. “[Sivers is] one of the last music-business folk heroes,” says Esquire magazine. His less-scripted approach to business is refreshing and will educate readers to feel empowered to follow their own dreams. Aspiring entrepreneurs and others trying to make their own way will be particularly comforted by Sivers straight talk and transparency -a reminder that anything you want is within your reach.

Tim Ferriss Reviews Anything You Want

Tim Ferriss is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The 4-Hour Body and The 4-Hour Workweek. He has a diverse background of experience, including working as an actor, speaking seven foreign languages, holding a world record in tango, and being a national Chinese kickboxing champion. He has written for Maxim and the Philadelphia Inquirer, has appeared on MTV and CBS radio, and has been interviewed or featured in such major publications as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and more. Read his review of Derek Sivers's Anything You Want:

I love this book!

Derek is the entrepreneur's entrepreneur. Just as important, perhaps more so--he is a phenomenal teacher. Whether detailing the fascinating rise of CDBaby, explaining catastrophic (but common) founder mistakes, or teaching me about relational databases in two minutes using analogies, he makes the complex simple. Moreover, he makes it all actionable.

If you want a true manifesto, a guidebook with clear signposts, and a fun ride you'll return to again and again, you have it here in this book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. --Tim Ferriss

About the Author

After making a living as a professional musician, Derek Sivers went looking for ways to sell his own CD online and ended up creating CD Baby, once the largest seller of independent music on the web with over $100M in sales for over 150,000 musician clients. Since 2008, Derek has traveled the world and stayed busy creating and nurturing creative endeavors, like Muckwork, his newest company where teams of efficient assistants help musicians do their “uncreative dirty work.” Derek writes regularly on creativity, entrepreneurship, and music on his blog:

5.0 out of 5 stars I liked this so much I bought 387 copies 13 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book takes about an hour to read but it will probably change the way you think about life.

Lots of people I know want to be entrepreneurs. Lots of people I know are entrepreneurs. Not enough of the people I know have worked out what is important in their lives. This book by Derek Sivers will probably help them work out what is important to them.

I read this book on holiday. I left it lying around one evening and the next morning a lawyer came up to me and apologised for 'stealing' the book but he had seen it on a table and picked it up out of curiosity. He was thinking very hard about leaving his firm and becoming an entrepreneur. This book persuaded him he shouldn't. He didn't have the passion for it.

I bought a few copies for people I know that I know are struggling with hard things in their business and personal lives. Without exception, they have come back with a fresh perspective and bought a copy for someone else they know.

It is hard to define what makes this book special. I am about as far from a wafty, softy new age person as you can get. It just offers some great and fresh perspectives on life. You don't have to accept it all as truth.

I enjoyed it, and enjoyed giving it away to people so much that I bought 380 extra copies for the attendees at Business of Software this year.

You also get free access to a whole load of music that is pretty cool too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't mistrust the five-star reviews 2 Aug 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
It's easy to mistrust a set of five-star reviews. As I write this, all the reviewers that have gone before me have also given this book five stars.

Deservedly so. It is a little gem with a lot of thought-provoking insights for anyone determined to make a success of their own business. Sivers comes across as man who is not just smart, but wise as well. It's short, well-written, and well worth reading if you own or aspire to own your own business.

Not just a book about building a business, this is a beautiful story of living life. Forget the self help, Power of Now stuff. Read a real life example of how to be happy.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it, but is it 5 * ?? 7 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I liked this book, but im not sure its 5* !

This book is not really going to tell you much about being an entrepreneur, but it is easy to read, with some though provoking sections. You get the idea that the author really has just done as he pleased and his success has come from a really laid back attitude, without regard for hard nosed business it was a bit of shock when he starts to talk about his 'business coach' at the back end of the book !

The author openly states he was .....right place, right time..... with his business proposition, with little thought of the gap in the market that he stumbled upon ! Its always difficult to buy into the entrepreneur flavour of the book after this....but I liked it and im sure you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't like this Sivers guy, but... 10 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was very sceptical about this book, because quite frankly, I don't like Derek Sivers. (don't ask me why, it's just the way it is)

However, I believe in learning from successful people regardless of who they are. Plus, the other reviews sort of sway me as well.

At this point, I have read just a few pages and I had to stop and do this review, before going back to reading. Why?

Because I have already gotten more than my money's worth!

Here is the thing: if you are SERIOUS about business and being an entrepreneur, you MUST read this book.

I don't want to reveal exactly what I discovered, but once you get the book you'll quickly understand why this is a crucial book for all of us to read.

Look, if you apply the philosophy in it you'll make more money and have a better quality of life. Just get the book now, you'll thank me later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insights 5 Jun 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Derek Sivers talks about his experiences growing CD Baby to a $22 million company. Rather than the usual ‘growth at any price’ approach, his philosophy is to concentrate on being happy and doing the right thing by your customers. It is a slim volume, you can read it one sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, practical and easily digestible 29 Jun 2011
his is a short, well-written, thought-provoking, deep, entertaining and useful book. Ostensibly a set of stories about Derek Sivers's journey building and selling CD Baby, it's actually a philosophy (but not a dogma) and an illustration of how being an entrepreneur is entirely compatible with leading a life well lived. A brilliant book, well worth reading.
