Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
On Anything Goes, pianist Brad Mehldau sounds looser in the pocket than he has done in a long time in returning to the ruminative piano trio format with which he made his reputation. This comes after his so-so excursion into atmospheric pop production (Largo). In applying some of his quirkiest personal touches to jazz and pop standards, he also sounds--no offence intended--more awake. Hooking up with his longstanding rhythm mates, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, Mehldau offsets his patented lyrical touches with antic minimalist strokes, bold vamps, and high-stepping two-hand strategies.

Alternately spiky and seductive, his unaccompanied playing on an initially languid "Get Happy" is a winning case of the left hand pretending not to know what the right hand is doing. Reharmonising Charles Chaplin's "Smile" with dense harmonic clouds, he obliterates that hoary melody. There's another sighing Radiohead treatment, "Everything in its Right Place" and an attempt at enlivening Paul Simon's "Still Crazy (After All These Years)" but it's his happy time with Thelonious Monk's "Skippy" that tells us that his best may be yet to come. --Lloyd Sachs, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid set by the piano maestro, 22 May 2004

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I first came across Brad Mehldau as few years ago on a record with Lee Konitz. Having subsequently seen him live on three occasions, it is clear that he has a fantstic technique and an approach to the piano (not to mention touch) that recalls Bill Evans. (Listen to "Dreamsville" for example.)This record is a very good representation of the music that I have heard him play on his gigs and is as good a statement of the current state of mainstream jazz piano that you are likely to hear.
Mehldau selects an interesting range of material, largely based on standards, but not afraid to include some Monk, Radiohead and, perhaps the most surprisingly successful track on the album, a number by Paul Simon. All the songs have strong melodies and Mehldau plays with great beauty on ballads such as "The nearness of you." This trio has been in existance for a number of years now and the cohesion between the members is amazing. Jorge Rossy is particularly sympathetic and why this drummer has not picked up more kudos amazes me. Fans of Keith Jarrett's trio will find alot to admire with this record that is superior in all respects to the other CD I have by Mehldau's group- "Places" from a few years back. Even listeners used to the likes of Oscar Peterson will not find this disc too taxing. I would even recommend it to newcomers to jazz, especially if coming from a classical music fan base. (I have heard him play a concinving Chopin Prelude at one of his gigs and it is a shame that it is not included on this record as it was one of the highlights.)
However, those hoping to see where the future of jazz piano lies will not find it here and should look instead to the likes of Jason Moran. All in all though, "Anything goes" is a welcome addition to the pino trio canon. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Trio Returns, 15 Jan 2004
It been almost 3 years since the Trio's last outing, the magnificent Progression double album, with Brad choosing to release the more experimental Largo album in 2002 with producer Jon Biron. Now however Brad along with bassist Larry Grenadier and Drummer Jorge Rossy are back two what they do best. So far i have only heard a sample track from Label Warner Bros. of the old show tune Get Happy put into a intresting 7/4 time signature which is simply Brilliant showing the trio has taken a new step forward sounding better than ever.
From the title of the album i would guess that there could be quite a few show tunes on it. When i caught them on their last tour they were playing Anything Goes in the set, along with Get Happy, Burt Bacharachs Alfie, and an unbelievalble version of Paul Simon's 50 ways to leave your lover. Hopefully that will make it on to this album.
So order this Album now and experiance one of the greatest Piano trios ,along with Jarrett and Bill Evans, pushing the boundaries yet again.
