Scadinavian Edition, PAL/Region 2 Blu-Ray 1080p High Definition Widescreen DTS-HD Master Audio: Subtitles: Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish. Audio: French. No English Subtitles. With a loving, stable marriage of many years, a devoted son named Oscar (Lancelot Roch) and a quiet life in suburban France, life feels supremely happy for French couple Julien (Vincent Lindon) and Lisa (Diane Kruger). The household is shaken to its core, then, when an unthinkable series of events befalls the family: the police suddenly turn up and inexplicably arrest Lisa for a murder of which she appears to have no knowledge. She receives a sentence of twenty years in prison, but Julien remains convinced of her innocence - and unwilling to endure the time it will take to sort through French bureaucracy and obtain an appeal. Reeling in turmoil, Julien grows so distraught that he resorts to a desperate plan of action by deciding to spring Lisa from confinement.

Enjoyed this film immensely. A superb thriller, immediately engaging and wonderfully paced. I thought both Lindon and Kruger performed wonderfully. I know some people really don't enjoy watching subtitled films, so if you fall into that category this may not be for you (French with English subtitles), otherwise I HIGHLY recommend Anything For Her.

I have seen another review posted here which awarded two stars and complained about holes in the plot (where did he get the gun and why did he leave details of his escape plan on the wall for the police to find), but please note well the comments that have been posted in direct response to this review! These questions ARE answered in the film. :-)

The film is really focused on the husband's struggle for his family and is not a courtroom drama which lingers on the question of her innocence; I think this is worth noting in light of another review here.

I'm not one for long reviews I'm afraid, but hope that this balances/answers some questions raised by some of the less enthusiastic reviews for this film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing and touching 5 Jun 2010
Format:DVD
Anything For Her is a French thriller directed by Fred Cavaye and stars Vincent Lindon (Vendredi Soir) and Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds). It follows a blissfully happy husband and wife whose lives get torn apart when Lisa (Kruger) gets falsely accused of murder and is sentenced to 20 years in prison. In a few flashbacks we see how she's been linked to the murder and ultimately how hopeless her case is with the odds stacked against her. Her husband Julien (Lindon), decides to study the possibilities of breaking her out but tells no one. The story is how it becomes an all out obsessive project for Julien and what makes this film work is that despite some violent scenes, it never slides into a derivative and nonsensical action cliché but instead retains a suspenseful and intellectual style of storytelling.

Although the plot may seem a little implausible, the point of Cavaye's film is in showing the anxiety and naivety of a normal man facing up to what he must become and what must be done in tackling such a mammoth task. He's not a thug, fighter or criminal and neither does he become one - we never doubt it's his love for his wife that motivates him and keeps him going. His tenacity to be reunited with her is his life-force and never revenge or justification.

Anything For Her is well paced, exciting and extremely moving. It perhaps embodies the spirit of Roman Polanski's Frantic and Guillaume Canet's Tell No One, so it may feel familiar as it plays out at times. That said, it's a small criticism for a film that's incredibly well acted and still delivers a unique and potent love story.

This review tells you the premise - so don't read on if you want no idea of what it's about.
A tightly constructed prison break movie with a terrific twist; Julien is a schoolteacher who plans to break his wife Lisa out of prison from the outside. But with a four year old son to take care of and no knowledge of the criminal underworld, he is hard-pressed to figure out how to do this.
This is one of the best films I have seen for a couple of years; every one I know who saw it in the cinema was just riveted. I'm in awe of how well-paced it is. It works really well on DVD. It has real heart, too - there are several moments that show insight and depth beyond the normal thriller. Loved it.
I hear it's been remade with Russell Crowe - not surprising that Hollywood leapt on a story this good. I'd recommend seeing this version first.
