100 Any-Size Star Blocks 24 Dec. 2012
By Pear-Tree-Partridge - Published on
POSITIVE: The number of pictured star blocks had me clapping my hands in glee. I did not have a problem with printing out the size I wanted from the CD. There s a tip in the CD's FAQ section (though not in the book itself) which advises changing the print scaling option before printing.

NEGATIVE: However, when printed out, the foundation-pieced blocks are NOT separated by their individual units, and their is no 1/4 inch seam allowance printed around each square. This immediately affects accuracy and means that my star points would get "eaten up" in the seam line. In fact, a closer look at the cover page photo shows mismatched seams, unevenly pieced blocks and messy star points. I am so disappointed and can't believe that these basic factors were not picked up before the book was published.

POSITIVE: In the book, there are also 40 four-patch and nine-patch star blocks that are made by templates (provided accurately on the CD in various sizes), so the book will still be useful for these.

I have turned to "Carol Doak's Simply Sensational 9-Patch Stars" which is a very well written book on paper piecing nine-patch stars. However, this is limiting as I particularly wanted to try my hand at foundation piecing spinning stars and whirligig blocks.

This disk accompanying this book is very difficult to use. The quilter is supposed to be able to enlarge the patterns to the desired size but it doesn't work at all- just keeps printing the same small original size. I'm very unhappy with the book. I'm not a computer genius but am literate. Very disappointing.
