BBC Review

Soulwax were making quite an impression on me four years ago at Reading Festival. Hit-song "Too Many DJs" was being played repeatedly by the kids in nearby tents on ghetto blasters as we all prepared for headline slots from Pulp, Beck and Limp Bizkit. However, the 16-year-olds who discovered the merits of Soulwax at Reading 2000 are now 20 and have Hail To The Thief as a soundtrack to worrying about their dissertations. 2004's kids, on the other hand, are far too worried about their Strokes-y über cool and skinny-tied nonchalance to consider a new offering from the punky, guitar-led analogue beats of Soulwax. But perhaps they should.

After 2003's excellent DJ mash-up bootleg album As Heard On Radio Soulwax - under the Dewaele brothers other moniker 2 Many DJs - Soulwax have returned to the studio as a four-piece with their instruments to record Any Minute Now with top rock-producer Flood, of The Charlatans, U2 and PJ Harvey fame.

And this dance/electro-rock follow up to 2000's debut LP Much Against Everyone's Advice is a good genre-crossing effort. Much like their compatriots, Deus,Any Minute Now has an Americana feel vocally, but there are plenty of Euro-bleeps and fuzzy guitars, like on the dark Goldfrapp-esque "Please...Dont Be Yourself".

And it's with the electro-clash anthems that this album shines, rather than its less inspiring indie-pop offerings like "E Talking" and the title track. "KracK" is a sexy, smouldering, fizzer of a song and jagged, bitter epic "Accidents and Compliments" is a wonderfully distorted, angst-ridden view of the world. But "NY Excuse" with its glitzy, aggressive female vocals is the glorious, angular electro-disco dancefloor classic that really makes this record worth a listen. In the face of stiff mainstream competition from the likes of The Killers et al, it's a fair bet that nobody will have Soulwax on their minds at the minute, let alone on their ghetto blasters. They should be on both. --Andrew McGregor

Album Description

Any Minute Now is the new studio album produced by Flood and mixed by Alan Moulder. Soulwax are now internationally renowned not only as a rock band but also as their 2 Many DJ's personas. The album includes the "Any Minute Now" single and also includes "NY Excuse", a hugely talked-about record on the cutting edge of clubland featuring Nancy of LCD Soundsystem's vocals.

I bought this album pretty much as soon as it came out as I really enjoyed MAEA. On the first few listens I didn't really get it, I thought it sounded a lot less powerful than the previous album, and with a lot less guitar madness.

I stuck with it and it really started to grow on me. I like a lot of electronic stuff but at first I found some of the noises Soulwax use to be a bit clunky. But after a bit you start to get it, NY Excuse being the best example. It's simple pounding stuff, like punk done with electronic sounds. I saw them do this live at it was fantastic.

There are still guitars in the mix. Any Minute Now is quite riffy, with a great fat keyboard wave right in the middle. Big guitars on Krack too tho they kind of flicker on and off (in a good way!). There's two quite indie-fied tracks in there - Accidents And Compliments and the rather magnificent The Truth Is So Boring.

But the really interesting stuff is the kind of electro-rocky soundin the likes of E Talking, Compute, NY Excuse and the moody Slowdance. I know this stuff is very of the moment, but Soulwax do bring something of their own to it, including the off-kilter lyrics.

So if you are looking for another MAEA you're probably going to be disappointed. This isn't the same sound. But personally I think they actually sound a lot more interesting now and I would even say MAEA sounds a bit too poppy in retrospect.

When i first heard Soulwax on MTV , i just knew i HAD to buy their album. So i bought it.And i wasnt dissapointed . This punk-filled electronica-packed piece of moody music is probably one of the most original albums i have ever heard . Opening up with the scorching bassline of E Talking and the electronic madness of Any Minute Now , this LP is packed with jaw-droppingly good tracks like the ear-pearcing KracK , the depressing Slowdance , the catchy NY Excuse and the beautiful The Truth is so Boring. A wonderful album which i recommend to all lovers of both electronics and rock music!

Now it's been a long time since we all talked about an album as eagerly anticipated as this. More than a year in the making and well worth everyday spent in my reckonning. The album at first listen leaves you wanting something a little heavier, but given a few more hours on the stereo and you start to realise what the band were trying to achieve. Not as 'guitary' as 'MAEA', appearing to move towards the electropunk sound that was audible in their first outing, it still grabs your attention and makes you wanna listen more.

Highlight tracks have to be The truth is so boring, A ballad to Forget (piano to the max) and the single Any Minute now.

It has to be said that anyone wanting to hear David sing his heart out will be disappointed as in this outing it seems to be more about the sounds from instruments and effect machines. See if you can hear the dying seagull finishing off one of the tracks ;-)

A Great buy for hardcore fans and If not for the music, then for the artwork. it is simply breathtaking, get it in the right light, and at the right angle to reveal the true faces that are the amazing SOULWAX.
