Book Description

25 Nov 2010
Any Day Now is an in-depth and highly visual chronology charting the early life and career of one of music s all-time greatest icons: David Bowie. This book is the ultimate fan guide for David Bowie's most devoted followers.

Packed with hundreds of interviews and images, Any Day Now offers a detailed year-by-year account of Bowie's life- from his birth in postwar London in 1947 to his departure from the UK in 1974.

With a wealth of new information and with each page featuring rare photographs, news clippings and memorabilia, the book also includes the most concise listing of early Bowie performances ever published.

Author Kevin Cann unravels many of the myths that have surrounded Bowie s early career in this encyclopaedic reference that will fascinate and entertain. Cann has worked on reissues of Bowie's back catalogues as well as anniversary releases of his albums. His role as a Bowie archivist for nearly 20 years has allowed him to amass extremely rare photographs and memorabilia, which are combined with interviews with a hundred of Bowie's friends and associates. Through his dedicated research and its fascinating results, Cann has developed a reputation as one of Bowie's greatest and most trustworthy biographers.

With the Victoria and Albert Museum's unprecedented, career-spanning retrospective, "David Bowie" is underway and Bowie's newest album The Next Day having shot straight up to number one on the music charts, now is the perfect time for fans to engross themselves in the best David Bowie book currently available.

Author Kevin Cann has worked closely with the V&A in producing the "David Bowie is" exhibition, meaning the same standard of care and prestige put into the exhibition has been put into this book as well. In fact, many of the rare photos on show at the V&A were first seen in Any Day Now.

About the Author

Kevin Cann is regarded as the number one biographer of David Bowie. He has worked as a designer and writer for the last 30 years and in 1983 wrote his first book, David Bowie: A Chronology for Vermilion. In 1988 he co-authored Kate Bush: A Visual Documentary with the late Sean Mayes. In 1994 he worked with Mick Ronson's family to stage Mick Ronson's Memorial concerts. Also in 1994, Kevin worked with David Bowie for the first time, the following year working as an assistant on his first solo art exhibition in Cork Street London. In 1999 Kevin researched and coordinated the reissue of Bowie's back catalogue with EMI (17 albums), and has contributed chronologies for various David Bowie 30th anniversary releases, including Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs. He acted as consultant on Bowie's and Mick Rock s Genesis Publications book Moonage Daydream (2002) and Geoff MacCormack's From Station To Station (2007). He has also worked with many musicians including Bill Nelson, Adam Ant and Brian Eno. He has most recently collaborated with the Victoria and Albert Museum for their exhibition "David Bowie is". He lives in Kent.

5.0 out of 5 stars a standard reference for serious Bowie followers 10 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I can understand why the previous reviews were not of great help: lack of description.

You should know before buying this book that it is a chronology, therefore you cannot expect massive entries on (all) the various subjects considered; but the one about the "Ziggy album" cover is definitely extended.

This having been said, the older ones among Bowie fans will remember that Cann wrote a chronology almost thirty years ago which, for those times, was very helpful.
What you get today is an improved version of the above, with an abundance of pictures (of memorabilia as well), which will probably have a follow up for the years from 1974 onwards.
At the end of the book you also find a listing of live shows, televisions appearances, and an essential bibliography.

I think it will become, together with the acclaimed Nicholas Pegg's The Complete David Bowie the standard, and essential, reference text for bowiephiles.

For a proper biography you will have to look somewhere else (by using Cann and Pegg bibliographies, by the way).

Worth the buy, and you might also try to have one copy of the limited edition as well (because there is a limited edition).

5.0 out of 5 stars King B 7 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
There's nothing much I can add, other than another 5 star review. I'm loving this book - the very early part of Bowie's career has rarely been given this much attention, and the detail is enthralling for fans. It's not just lists and dates - the anecdotes and clippings are priceless.

Beautifully presented too, with lots of rare photos.

I hope some follow ups detailing Bowie's US and European years are in the pipeline!

5.0 out of 5 stars Authoritative and essential 3 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Packed with exhaustively-researched detail and decorated with countless rare photos and other ephemera, Kevin Cann's flawless Bowie book will delight both the hardcore fan and the fairweather friend. You need no other Bowie books than this and Nicholas Pegg's COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE. I only hope Kevin Cann is now working on the next volume, picking up the story after Bowie moves to America.
