a well matched tie in to their comeback movie,
By spike "Robot In Disguise" (united kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anvil!: The Story of Anvil (Hardcover)
The Book to the movie is a lovely and touching read, at times Robb and Lips Kudlow's caveman talk may seem grating to those who never understand heavy metal but how many band members out there who have formed a band as kids and had lasted as long as the two core members of canadian demi gods Anvil who unfairly fell under the radar like so many cult acts whilst their fellow counterparts of rock/metal went on to enjoy legendary success notably Metallica who lie Anvil where an embryonic band finding their feet and with luck unlike the two canadians went on to release many acclaimed albums. The story is one that you can laugh and shed a little tear to at the same time which is backed up by some memorable if drow dropping through shocking photographs of the two. A good read till the film is out on dvd!

This review is from: Anvil: The Story of Anvil (Paperback)
A story of how two men can love each other through the decades. Poignant, funny and uplifting a story of two guys and a legendary 80's heavy metal outfit that just missed the big time and have never seemingly lost faith that they might just still make it. If you ever liked 80's heavy metal, knew someone that did, or just like a male bonding/love story or if you enjoyed I love you man I Love You, Man [DVD] [2009] then please buy or rent this, its just brilliant and true.

Awful book cover, great rock 'n' roll read!,

This review is from: Anvil!: The Story of Anvil (Hardcover)
This is the first book I have ever bought where I had to turn the dust jacket inside out. These guys may have looked like Adonis' 25 or so years ago, but the hairy belly with the shape of a double-hernia hanging over the trousers is pretty disgusting! Change the cover! You will scare children with this one! And with about 5% of Anvil fans being female, it's not nice for a guy to be seen with this when reading it on the bus or train to work. Yuk!So Anvil have finally made it after 30 years! Did anyone notice? I haven't done so yet, but this book is a part of their supposed latter-day rise to fame / comeback. It is a great rock 'n' roll read, and I enjoyed it for that reason, but it seems the band suffered a lack of good or even mediocre management, the lack of a good record company, and for their part because they were not willing to move out of Canada because of family ties. They have also never had a really BIG hit album due to these reasons, and they have yet to write their 'most memorable song,' their 'Stairway To Heaven' or 'Ace Of Spades.' What song ARE Anvil best remembered for, does anyone know? Exactly. That's why they never made it BIG! Had they migrated to LA or New York, found a decent management and record company then they would be up there with the gods; but they didn't, so perhaps this book and / or 'Anvil: The Movie' will turn it around for them? I wish them luck as the book tells of how the movie is causing something of a stir, so I hope they make it despite this very late hour in their career. Oh, and I found the references to times / tours spent with Girlschool and Motorhead interesting, but excuse me, there is NO WAY Anvil "blew Motorhead off stage every night" on the 1983 tour on which they were support; dream on for that one, boys! And Lemmy may well have phoned Lips to ask if he'd replace Fast Eddie when he left, but if he'd said yes it would have been the death of Motorhead; so thank goodness he declined!
