While I did not enjoy this novel quite as much as TBO, it is still head and shoulders above the majority of alternative history. Mr Slade's novels deserve to be read by a far wider audience.

AoN explores the immediate post-war world created by the nuclear destruction of Germany. We see a bankrupt and prostrate Britain, a stranded Germany army group trying to find a way to surrender with honour to the Russians and Thailand facing a threat from Imperial Japan.

As with TBO, I can not recommend this book more highly. I'm looking forward to the next novel, which is due in November.

Kill the editor! 7 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
This series has been getting better and better, except in one area: editing. Whoever edited these books (assuming anyone did...) has the editorial skills of a sick lizard. And is doing the books a massive disservice.

The story expands.... 15 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
The world has moved on since "The Big One" and a very interesting and thought provoking world it is too!

I really enjoyed the descriptions of combat in the Far East, you could say it was almost too perfect for the newly badged Officer but it is a novel after all. The political machinations were well thought out and make for an interesting world order with Britain on its knees while it's (former) Empire thrives under the shield of the American nukes and bombers.

It definitely has the feel of being the middle of a wider story but keeps up a brisk pace so doesn't suffer for it in my opinion.

Can't wait to read the final book in this trilogy.
