"The Theatre and Its Double", published here in its entirety, remains
the most radical text on performance in print today. The lesser known
"Seraphim's Theatre" outlines the actor's application of the Taoist
principles of fullness and emptiness, and has provided inspiration to
actors and directors in experimental and non-naturalistic areas of the
theatre.
"The Cenci" is a practical application of some of the ideas contained
in the "Theatre of Cruelty Manifesto" and is an adaptation by Artaud of an
historical scandal which had already been treated by Shelley and Stendhal.
The play remains a landmark in twentieth century theatre as an early
production of the "Theatre of Cruelty" and it becomes an experience of
unusual power and beauty on the stage. A slightly shortened version of "The
Theatre and Its Double" is also available in a seperate volume.

From the Back Cover
Artaud is one of the two or three most influential and radical theatrical innovators of the twentieth Century, whose theories, production ideas, writings and plays have brought a new poetic impulse and dynamic intensity to the stage to replace the naturalistic theatre that preceded his own. A member of the surrealist group, he brought many of the ideas and techniques from expressionism and surrealism to his own conception of epic theatre and he is not only a direct ancestor of "the theatre of the absurd" but also a primary and increasing influence on the many forms of drama which followed absurdism and are still emerging today. Peter Brook's "theatre of cruelty" is only one of the developments of artaudian theory.
The first volume of the Collected Works contain the important correspondence with Jacques Riviere, and his extraordinary explorations of consciousness and creativity in Umbilical Limbo and Nerve Scales, as well as essays on life and death, suicide, drugs, lunacy, religion and art, poems, manifestos, the terrifying short play The Spurt of Blood, letters and other material. This important volume is essential to an understanding of the art and theatre of our time and will give endless pleasure and information to its readers.
