As an heir to family fortune, Jin-hyuk has money, the looks, the charm, everything except finding the love of his life. So he sets up a cake shop where women are sure to come. He hires Sun-woo, a talented patissier who had a crush on Jin-hyuk back in high school. Along with and ex-boxing champion Gi-beom and a clueless bodyguard Su-young, the four unique and handsome young men stir up the quiet neighborhood at their cake shop, Antique. Although seemingly careless and happy, each of the four men have unforgettable past that they are afraid to face. But their secrets slowly begin to unravel.

"Antique Bakery" was originally released on 2.35:1 aspect ratio and I have the original Korean DVD release that was in the correct ratio. With this UK release it is woefully obvious how presenting the feature in the wrong aspect ratio affects the visuals with faces often cut in half and the picture looking obviously cropped in many places. It is a pity as the supplementary features were good. Avoid until Terracotta re-release the feature in the correct aspect.

It's a bold move to mix frothy, frilly fun with a deep, dark sub-plot. Each of the main characters has a public veneer which is gradually stripped away to reveal their deepest secrets, the secrets which have led them to where they are now. What you don't notice is the dark sub-plot which is the reason why the lead character opens the cake shop in the first place. It's a great little farce and well worth a watch although I'm not totally convinced that the mix of comedy and crime works too well in this case.

Just reading about the plot synopsis of this film in Neo magazine made me zip out and buy it and I'm glad I did.
It's a warm feel good film that's a great mixture of comedy, musical and drama and I loved it.

If you've had a bad day then this is a great antidote.

This is one of my favorite South Korean films and I am delighted that it has got a UK release at long last. 'Antique Bakery' is based upon a Japanese manga of the same name, and directed by Min Kyu-Dong, who is the co-director of the second, and arguably best, in the Whispering Corridors series (1998-2009), 'Memento-mori'. The film tells the story of four men, whose lives collide when they end up working together at the same bakery. 'Antique Bakery' is a film that transcends genre conventions, mixing together elements of the musical, romantic comedy and horror genres. Overall the film is a delight for the eyes and ears. Highly recommended.
