Book Description

30 Nov 2007
Knitting, beading and stitching projects to make - or not. Whatever.

If you would describe your favorite crafts as "supercute" - no, let us rephrase: If the idea of handcrafting the most nauseatingly adorable plush bunny you've ever seen sets your heart atwitter - feel free to stop reading. We'll understand. Really.

If you're still reading, you may be cynical and fed up with syrupy crafts as we are. (Huzzah!) For you and your likeminded AntiCraftspeople, we have hand-selected twenty-five projects from the most talented crafters you'll never find in the mainstream (whatever that even means). Behold:

  • Creations your goody-goody little sister will roll her eyes at, including snake-motif thigh-highs and a duct-tape corset.
  • Tips and sidebars to celebrate (with as much enthusiasm as any of us can muster) your delightfully dark nature, including suggested mood-enhancers (soundtracks, movies, etc.) for making each and every item.
  • Basic techniques for knitting, crochet and jewelry-making virgins - complete with step-by-step photos to save you from the embarrassment of asking that annoyingly perky coworker for help.
Join us in the AntiCraft movement - where self-expression, no matter how socially unacceptable, is given a scalpel and room to operate.

For style and presentation this book wins hands down. You just want to keep looking at it and re-reading it. But for me, the patterns and designs weren't up to much.

The majority of the book is crochet (which isn't even mentioned in the title), there's very little knitting even though it's the first item on the book cover. All the patterns (be it crochet, sewing, knitting or whatever) are for experienced crafters. There's a lot of inspiration here for beginners, but other than the recipes there's not much they could easily achieve. The book's big selling point seems to be the duct tape (AKA gaffer tape) corset, but even that isn't easy to make and is only given in skinny sizing.

Great ideas, great layout, but the projects aren't very do-able.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 7 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The authors of this book are so absorbed with their 'crazy' image that they fail to see that there really is not much substance to the book. It's a bit of an ego trip.
Definitely NOT value for money

4.0 out of 5 stars Love it 8 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
thought this was just going to be patterns lifted from the website, but instead it's all new things to make. Patterns are safer than the website, which can lean towards the sick, and are mostly things I want to make, and adapt to suit. Love the graffiti cross-stitch and am inspired to make the tree of life and death with some variations. Nice to read as well with recipes and facts, and nice to have other things to do than just knit, all in the same book. Can't give it 5 stars until I see how well proofread the patterns are.

2.0 out of 5 stars very disappointing. 2 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I found this book a little childish. It would have appealed to my 15yr old self but as an adult, this is a real let down. The writer is almost trying to hard to be weird, which I found annoying, and the crafts aren't all that sinister.
