Compiled from recordings culled from heyday of the scene (1980-84), the bands include the leading lights of the scene (Zounds/Dirt/Omega Tribe) as well as many of the lesser known bands that were the life-blood of the scene, pro-active in arranging gigs, making fanzines, organizing benefits etc. (Psycho Faction/Political Asylum/Anti-System).
Anti-War has been lovingly compiled after many years of research and groundwork, not least finding the bands that in most cases split before 1984! So, having listened to over 1000 recordings from vinyl, demo cassettes, unreleased studio recordings and live gigs we finally settled on 23 tracks for the first volume, 10 of which are previously unreleased.
Anti-War perfectly captures the whole ecstatic energy of the era, with its diverse mix of spiky barbs and intense diatribes all based around the Anti-War theme.

Great historical compilation for new and old alike.,
This review is from: Anti-War: Anarcho Punk Vol.1 (Audio CD)
First up if you're aware of a good few bands from the UK anarcho scene of the 1980s, a look down the track list will tell you that there's far more on offer here than the main bands from that era. Yes there's no Crass, no Conflict and (on this installment at least) no Poison Girls or Flux of Pink Indians. Let's fact it though, if you're interested in this era of UK punk then you've already heard those bands. What you get is coverage of the anarcho scene from bands who released several records (Political Asylum, Lost Cherrees etc) to bands that only ever did tape releases (Blood Robots). These are the absolute gems of the collection for me, not being old enough to have been around at the time I haven't got these old tapes gathering dust at home, and they don't turn up on Ebay or in second hand shops very often either. I people who were around at the time will also like these just cos it'll bring back all those memories of tape trading, and bands they might have seen supporting one of the bigger names etc. The sheer amount of effort that must have gone into tracking a lot of these bands down is immense, most of them aren't playing music anymore and haven't for 15 - 20 years!!! Every track has been remastered so whilst this collection is compiled from all kinds of sources (I'm guessing, original DAT, records themselves, even original home tape) they all sound of reasonable quality, especially when you consider the basic equipment some of them were recorded on. If you've bought some Crass or Conflict CDs in recent years and want to find out more about this era of the punk scene then you should buy this CD and discover some history. If you're an old punk who thinks everything went downhill in the punk scene after 1984 then you should buy this and relive the past. And if you're young and politicised and want to hear some music full of tirades about the system then you should buy this, unfortunately a lot of the messages contained here are still as relevant today.

The Scene That Punk Forgot,
This review is from: Anti-War: Anarcho Punk Vol.1 (Audio CD)
Two decades on and the 'scene that punk seemingly forgot' comes back with less a bang, (and appropriately enough this being an Anarcho punk collection) and more an explosion of gritty, vibrant, evocative and emotive songs brimful of vitriol and displaying an intensity rare even today. The years have not diminished the power of Dirt, Zounds, Anthrax, Naked, Omega Tribe, Anti-System and the many others appearing on the first of this long overdue series that hopefully will stamp Anarcho punks authority onto the revisionist time mappers of contemporary punk. The vitality and eclectic styles of the Anarcho's of yore, is demonstrated in the distortion driven grind of Dirt, the mutant X-Ray Spex approach of Metro Youth, the anglo-folk stylisms of The Astronauts, the proto speed thrash of The Instigators, the unique operatic vocals of Youth in Asia, and the all out ballsy battering ram sound of Anti-System. 23 tracks, 64 minutes of music and a 24-page booklet, full of loads of useful and fascinating history and pictures from back then, all at a great Anarcho price, makes this CD an essential purchase.

Classic old school anarcho punk,
By Attibcfc (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anti-War: Anarcho Punk Vol.1 (Audio CD)
Well, congratulations to John from overground records for putting together this excellent compilation. It must have been tempting to just go for the big names in the UK scene but this has been avoided to bring together a diverse collection of bands that really does show the variety of sound that existed within the genre. I fear too many people think of the more thrashy sounds as epitomising the anarcho-scene - if you are one of those then buy this and be enlightened.
The sound quality on almost all tracks is excellent (unlike some of the overground single-band releases where sound quality on tracks is variable) and that again pays testament to the time and effort John must have taken to select and hunt down the best stuff before deciding to include it. I really should't highlight one track as there are so many wonderful songs here but I will say the A-heads "Forgotten Hero" is worth the money on its own.
