3.0 out of 5 stars one of the best punk albums, 31 Dec 2003
By A Customer
I think that "Germ Free Adolescents" was one of the best punk albums of its era. Why only 3 stars, then? It isn't because of the additional material that isn't so great -- I can easily just not play the live disc. What's wrong with this particular package is that the mastering isn't very good. The sound is thin and bright compared with the previous cd issued by Virgin (which lacked the copious bonus tracks of this package). Given that it's the original album that's so classic, I suggest that fans should buy the Virgin cd instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Experimental and unique!....yet this madness works!...., 23 Jun 2002
Nothing can describe this album better than the word 'bizzare.' The first CD contains many of the most energetic and experimental punk music that I have ever heard. From the mad lyrics of 'plastic bag' to the catchy chorus of 'Oh Bondage up yours!' this album is truly amazing. Although Poly and her crew are happy little punksters..this album is full of hate and anger..not in the nu-metal kind of way (ofcourse!) but in an anti- coperate, anti- genetics and anti consumer kind of way. Every lyric is meaningful and relevant to todays world, even though we are now over 30 years on from the first release of x-ray spex.

The second CD is live, and wow can you tell! it is excellent because there is so much energy and life in everything that Poly is saying, however, I read a review in a magazine and it said "X ray spex are good, shame that Poly can't sing." Now I know what they mean. But this is a CD for anyones collection. The only down thing on this album are a couple of the bonus demo tracks that drag on a bit and lose me for a while, but overall what does that matter on such a great album!?

This is not punk of the Undertones and Sex pistols kind of way, this is a kind of sub genre which is weird yet wonderful. A little experimental in places. Germ Free Adolescents for example is very slow and calming, which doesnt quite fit this Punk genre, but whatever this music is its fantastic and greatly unique!

The extras of the lyrics in the cover are such a bonus to this album. Even on their own, they are fun to read and are humorous in places, even though there is such a strong and serious theme of 'the world in the future' running through every nook and cranny of the album.

Superb.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much time has passed....., 10 Oct 2003

I love Identity and Germ Free Adolescence and I think that The Day The World Turned Day-Glo is a masterpiece.
But this collection really grates after a while. The studio tracks are good enough but the rough mixes and Live stuff is horrendous. Don't get me wrong, the sound was perfect for those of us at punk gigs in the late 70's. This is what we wanted - rough, raw, exciting. But 25 years on and (I know this sounds like my dad!) it's just a noise now.
This isn't true of other bands when you listen to their old live material (Penetration sound great). But I think it's Poly Styrenes relentless wailing and self obsession that is so hard to listen to now.

Having said all that, for the few pounds it costs, this album is well worth buying just for the studio tracks.

The reason I have given 2 stars is that the studio tracks and especially the singles deserve 4 or 5 stars but they are only 16 out of 37 tracks in this collection. Also the 2 CDs supplied are marked identically so you cannot see which one is the studio and which one is the live disk. Best thing to do is when you know for sure which is the live disk, throw it in the bin.
