For those of you that are unaware of the body of work by trumpeter Eddie Henderson, be prepared for a shock; Mr. Henderson is probably one of the most talented and innovative trumpeters of the late 20th century. Having played with the early 70's Herbie Hancock groups and being guided by the late great Miles Davis, Eddie really has been in some of the best musical company. This is quite evident on this Anthology, which spans four of his albums from the 70's. The mood is always very funky, with the rhythm section from The Headhunters consistantly providing jazz & funk in equal measure. There are also some very spacey moments that show where he took the spark from Miles and made it a fire, most notably tracks like "Galaxy" & "Involuntary Bliss". I have a personal reason for speaking so highly of the man & the music; I & my Band (Mr.Gone) backed Eddie in the summer of 2000 in London & Manchester, and to play the music with THE MAN will always stay with me. If only more people were aware of the music on this CD when it originally came out, Eddie would be easily as big as his contemporaries. Make Eddie happy & buy this CD!!!

I vividly remember buying the album Mahal in 1979 at the age of 18. It was my first true taste of jazz fusion and it blew me away.In a post-punk era we had become despondant with the pop world of new wave and we looked to black musical art forms to try to some how maintain the 'revolution'' in a far more mature and subtle way.The world of jazz has always evolved; it didn't need a punk style kick up the ass like the rock scene did!

In the UK we coined the phrase 'jazz-funk' around that time which I still think is a disservice to the experimental jazz artists that defined the genre. The term is not descriptive enough to explain the music of a man who was personally introduced to the trumpet by Miles Davis.

Just reading the artists included on this CD is liking a shopping list of fusion jazz musicians in the seventies. You can clearly hear the tracks that acted as a funky apprenticeship for Patrice Rushen who features on some tracks.

This is great music which has stood the test of time suprisingly well. Not for jazz purists but still retaining some very polished musicianship.

Fans of rock/pop will dismiss this as boring but they simply do not get it. Just kick back, close your eyes and get lost in the cosmic trumpet vibe of Eddie and the gang.'Involuntary Bliss'(I have on my CD player at the time of writing this) does exactly what it says on the tin.

This CD features some of the best tracks from Mr. Henderson's four experimental fusion albums from the seventies. At first listen some of this music sounds a bit like funky American backgound cop show music with a heavy jazz injection. You may think some tracks are familiar and this is because the music of Eddie henderson has been widely sampled by the hip-hop fraternity which is quite a tribute to its longevity.

If you enjoy Lonnie Liston Smith and the jazzier side of Tom Browne you should get a lot of pleasure out of this.buy it,try it,like it!

I've always loved Eddie Henderson's music. There's a groove and a soulfulness about it that a lot of jazz musicians - and funk musicians for that matter - don't seem to deliver.

This compilation (thank you Soul Brother) brings together some of his deeper sessions with floor-fillers like 'Say You Will' and 'Prance On'.

Even the cuts that are less danceable make me smile because they're as funky as h*ll. If you like Bennie Maupin's haunting sax and the ever-solid and groovy bass work of Paul Jackson, you'll find them a great accompaniment to Henderson's unique trumpet sound throughout this fantastic disc.

If it only contained the insane disco version of 'Cyclops' I'd rate this a 5 and consider it the perfect jazz-funk album.

I'd heard a lot of good things about this album and sure it has been played a lot, but the key tunes remain the strongest.. I thought there may of been tracks of quality that I may not of heard.. Plods.

Fusion heaven 5 Sept. 2000
By Billiam Woddington - Published on Amazon.com

From the opening of Kudu to the end of Movin' On this is a feast for fusion lovers. Loads of fat and funky grooves will get your bits moving. If you've sampled the Blue Note 'Blue Break Beats' series you'll recognise a few of the tunes here: and it's great to get a whole album of Eddie Henderson's 70's fusion music reissued on CD. An essential purchase!

a must have if you have no Henderson and love 70's & 80's jazz 9 May 2015

Great collections of music. All the musicians on the cuts are top tier. This is the 70's - 80's jazz to perfection. If you are a fan of Herbie Hancock, Patrice Rushen, Lee Ritenour, Alfonso Johnson, and the Headhunters music you will love this collection. Eddie is great on all these cuts whether he is out front leading the flow or side by side with everyone in the mix. If you don't have any Henderson then start with this to whet your appetite.
