This is a very long overdue compilation of mainly the original (and in my opinion the best) incarnation of The Mission. This compilation covers the Phonogram years 1986-1994.
It kicks off this 2 and half hours of music from the start with their first single ‘Serpents Kiss’ and finishing with the final recording for Phonogram, the epic ‘Afterglow’. I think this package is aimed at both the fan and the casual buyer
THE CASUAL BUYER: It contains all 14 UK top 40 singles including ‘Wasteland’, ‘Tower of Strength’ (here is far superior Bombay Mix), ‘Deliverance’, ‘Butterfly On A Wheel’, ‘Severina’, ‘Beyond The Pale’, Into The Blue’, ‘Like A Child Again’ etc. with some of these in more interesting edit or extended versions.
THE FANS: It has a new to CD of the edit version of ‘Crystal Ocean’, an unreleased live version of ‘Blood Brother’ recorded at a mammoth 7 sold out nights at London’ Astoria, a session version of the popular live and unreleased track ‘Shelter From The Storm’ and 4 demos from the ‘Carved In Sand’ period including an interesting and different version of ‘Belief’ produced by Mike Fraser (from The Cult, Aerosmith etc.), an early more rock version of the hit ‘Hands Across The Ocean’, a piano driven ‘Grapes of Wrath’ both produced by Tim Palmer and most interesting a completely unreleased track ‘Diamond Cuts’ Diamond’ which only eagle eyed fans knew of it’s existence by being in the making of documentary ‘Waves Upon The Sand’ on a sheet of track lying on the mixing desk!
Apart from the above it also shows you the depth of the sound of the band by including choice album tracks ‘And The Dance Goes On…’, ‘Trail of Scarlet’ (it’s criminal this wasn’t a single) and forgotten b-sides including gems such as ‘For Ever More’, ‘Bird of Passage’ and the one off recording of T-Rex’s ‘Metal Guru’ by their alter-egos The Metal Gurus.
Overall a truly exceptional compilation made for every home and hopefully show the world what this band bring to music, everything from good rock to good pop!
