Product Description

Album Description

The Anthology - The Phonogram Years is a 2CD set including all 11 of The Missions Top 40 hits, with big hits such as 'Wasteland', 'Deliverance' and 'Butterfly On A Wheel' alongside rare mixes, long lost b-sides, BBC sessions and previously unreleased material. The package has personally been put together by Wayne Hussey and he has written extensive sleeve notes, with stories and anecdotes on each track included on this set. This 30 track collection contains 5 previously unavailable tracks and 5 tracks appearing on CD for the first time.

About the Artist

Almost 20 years to the day since Wayne Hussey announced that his band would be known as The Mission (rather than The Sisterhood), this anthology, curated by Wayne himself, celebrates one of the UK's most successful rock bands of the post punk years.

What more could you want from a compilation? All 14 UK top 40 singles, forgotten B-sides, Album cuts and unreleased Live, Demo and Session tracks and all compiled by Wayne Hussey himself!

This is a very long overdue compilation of mainly the original (and in my opinion the best) incarnation of The Mission. This compilation covers the Phonogram years 1986-1994.

It kicks off this 2 and half hours of music from the start with their first single ‘Serpents Kiss’ and finishing with the final recording for Phonogram, the epic ‘Afterglow’. I think this package is aimed at both the fan and the casual buyer

THE CASUAL BUYER: It contains all 14 UK top 40 singles including ‘Wasteland’, ‘Tower of Strength’ (here is far superior Bombay Mix), ‘Deliverance’, ‘Butterfly On A Wheel’, ‘Severina’, ‘Beyond The Pale’, Into The Blue’, ‘Like A Child Again’ etc. with some of these in more interesting edit or extended versions.

THE FANS: It has a new to CD of the edit version of ‘Crystal Ocean’, an unreleased live version of ‘Blood Brother’ recorded at a mammoth 7 sold out nights at London’ Astoria, a session version of the popular live and unreleased track ‘Shelter From The Storm’ and 4 demos from the ‘Carved In Sand’ period including an interesting and different version of ‘Belief’ produced by Mike Fraser (from The Cult, Aerosmith etc.), an early more rock version of the hit ‘Hands Across The Ocean’, a piano driven ‘Grapes of Wrath’ both produced by Tim Palmer and most interesting a completely unreleased track ‘Diamond Cuts’ Diamond’ which only eagle eyed fans knew of it’s existence by being in the making of documentary ‘Waves Upon The Sand’ on a sheet of track lying on the mixing desk!

Apart from the above it also shows you the depth of the sound of the band by including choice album tracks ‘And The Dance Goes On…’, ‘Trail of Scarlet’ (it’s criminal this wasn’t a single) and forgotten b-sides including gems such as ‘For Ever More’, ‘Bird of Passage’ and the one off recording of T-Rex’s ‘Metal Guru’ by their alter-egos The Metal Gurus.

Overall a truly exceptional compilation made for every home and hopefully show the world what this band bring to music, everything from good rock to good pop!

At the last minute, I bought tickets to see The Wonder Stuff (one of my top 5 favourite bands) supporting The Mission in Leeds. Realising I probably only knew maybe 2 Mission tracks ("Butterfly on a Wheel" and "Tower of Strength") and that this was a bit disgraceful for an ex-Goth, I went to Amazon to provide me with an album and this is the one I found.

After one listen I was deeply annoyed at myself that I hadn't heard much more of this before (this was confirmed at the gig, when they were wonderful)and could have been listening to this trove of wonder for years.

This seems to contain all The Mission you need, with so many loping guitar lines, Hussey's distinctive vocals and some versions on this that really bring out different elements. I wasn't aware of the cover of "Like A Hurricane", one of my all-time favourites from a hero, Neil Young. It doesn't touch the original, but it still soars, especially live. "Butterfly" and "Tower of Strength" are still the highlights, but this is an essential purchase for fan and potential new fan alike.
