Biography

1986 was the year that saw Liverpool beat Merseyside rivals Everton 3-1 at Wembley to win the FA Cup and complete their first league and cup double, Spitting Image hit the No. 1 spot in the UK pop charts with the irredeemable 'Chicken Song', and Robert De Niro starred in a film called 'The Mission'. But the biggest cultural event of the year was when Wayne Hussey, Craig Adams, ... Read more in Amazon's The Mission (UK) Store

What more could you want from a compilation? All 14 UK top 40 singles, forgotten B-sides, Album cuts and unreleased Live, Demo and Session tracks and all compiled by Wayne Hussey himself!
This is a very long overdue compilation of mainly the original (and in my opinion the best) incarnation of The Mission. This compilation covers the Phonogram years 1986-1994.
It kicks off this 2 and half hours of music from the start with their first single ‘Serpents Kiss’ and finishing with the final recording for Phonogram, the epic ‘Afterglow’. I think this package is aimed at both the fan and the casual buyer
THE CASUAL BUYER: It contains all 14 UK top 40 singles including ‘Wasteland’, ‘Tower of Strength’ (here is far superior Bombay Mix), ‘Deliverance’, ‘Butterfly On A Wheel’, ‘Severina’, ‘Beyond The Pale’, Into The Blue’, ‘Like A Child Again’ etc. with some of these in more interesting edit or extended versions.
THE FANS: It has a new to CD of the edit version of ‘Crystal Ocean’, an unreleased live version of ‘Blood Brother’ recorded at a mammoth 7 sold out nights at London’ Astoria, a session version of the popular live and unreleased track ‘Shelter From The Storm’ and 4 demos from the ‘Carved In Sand’ period including an interesting and different version of ‘Belief’ produced by Mike Fraser (from The Cult, Aerosmith etc.

At the last minute, I bought tickets to see The Wonder Stuff (one of my top 5 favourite bands) supporting The Mission in Leeds. Realising I probably only knew maybe 2 Mission tracks ("Butterfly on a Wheel" and "Tower of Strength") and that this was a bit disgraceful for an ex-Goth, I went to Amazon to provide me with an album and this is the one I found.

After one listen I was deeply annoyed at myself that I hadn't heard much more of this before (this was confirmed at the gig, when they were wonderful)and could have been listening to this trove of wonder for years.

This seems to contain all The Mission you need, with so many loping guitar lines, Hussey's distinctive vocals and some versions on this that really bring out different elements. I wasn't aware of the cover of "Like A Hurricane", one of my all-time favourites from a hero, Neil Young. It doesn't touch the original, but it still soars, especially live. "Butterfly" and "Tower of Strength" are still the highlights, but this is an essential purchase for fan and potential new fan alike.

After getting the chance to see The Mission again at the end of last year, I went to order their new album and came across this one too. As most of my albums are actually on cassette, it was great to come across a cd with so many great songs all together. Would definately recommend getting this. With 2 cds there is a lot of listening.Glad to have it.

This album is not a best of album it is pieced together by the band how they want to tell thier own story. Some very well loved tracks and some lesser known mixes. I am glad I bought it. Cant believe I missed them up untill now
