Masterful,
By
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
These recordings are pretty much before my time but I came across it in the eighties and regardless of the style of music (whether you like it or not) it is a pleasure to hear someone who has such complete mastering of his instrument. Admittedly some of the songs are a whimsical view on mediaeval music as only hippies dancing bare-foot in a field can really do but Renbourns playing always elevates them from being trite to being worth listening to.

Excellent collection...,
By B. Bowman "Double B" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Anthology (Audio CD)
This collection was my introduction to the music of John Renbourn and didn't disappoint. For starters, how can you go wrong with a two disc set featuring 34 songs which goes for $18? Not to mention, this compilation features instrumentals, several songs from Renbourn's albums with Bert Jansch, and his solo material. I hadn't realized the many facets to Renbourn's playing, thinking he was a typical "folk" artist when I got this collection. I was surprised to see that he was so influenced by the blues; he covers Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen" on disc two and his playing has a noticeable blues influence on many of the songs featured. (He even does a cover of Booker T. and The MG's "My Sweet Potato".) The diversity of the material he chose to cover throughout his career impressed me, but I was also stunned by his talent on the guitar. In fact, I'm surprised as a guitarist that I don't hear his name more often as an influence on other players. His picking on instrumentals like "Lucky Thirteen" blew me away, and there were several songs which I stopped and started several times just to hear certain guitar passages again. Overall, you can't beat this collection for the price. As a newcomer to the music of John Renbourn I found this to be an excellent introduction.
